Moneyline is just picking a team to win or lose outright. +170 means pay 100 win 170; -170 pay 170 to win 100. payouts change based on favoritism
Spread is betting on final score differential. -9.5 means if you bet on that team and they win by more than that amount bet pays you double your money (less concession for the house) or if you bet on a team not favored +9.5 as long as they lose by less than that amt (“covering the spread”) you win. payout same odds (point spread) changing
Over/Under: is the total amt to be scored by both each teams combined. O/O: 160 in a basketball game is whether or not the total score of both teams will be be be over or under that amt. (double your money less concession)
Higher scoring sports commonly use spreads (e.g., basketball, football). Lower scoring typically use money lines (eg, baseball hockey soccer). Over/unders are common in all sporting events
always thought it would be a cool job to be a casino sports book hedger. adjusting odds and payouts to refelct supply/demand for any game’s bets and minimizing loss
That’s what i’m saying. The moneylines i’m seeing on british websites are not like that. It’s clear cut. There is no -450 and all that,If a team’s favorite the odd’s are obv lesser but it’s still 1.2 or something ie bet 100$ and get 120$.
If the odds are “1.2” as you say it is the exact same thing as the “moneyline” mentioned above. It would be 120: bet $100, get $120 if you win…you make $20 either way.
Say there are 30 games over a season. Take a top team, you’ll be able to tell the close fixtures say 5 or more, Take 2-3 upsets. You’ve lost 1500 there and won 2200 throughout the remaining season. Rinse,Repeat for 4-5 top teams. You’re winning 3500 a season playing micro stakes.
Makes a lot of sense. There is plenty of opportunity in sports that very few follow. It’s not any different than a microcap stock that few analysts follow.
On a similar note, I knew this guy that was betting on european soccer and the gambling site wasn’t aware of the time difference. This was over a decade ago. The games were already over when they put the lines out. He cleaned up for 2 weeks before the company started suspecting something was wrong. Who knows how long it lasted. My friend took advantage for 2 weeks, maybe someone else did for longer.
