Working in the US

Hi, I know it’s not exactly the best time to be asking this question, but I’m looking to move to the US when the economy starts to pick up again. Anyone on the forum had the good fortune of getting to the US via their employer, the skilled immigrant visa, or DV lottery? I’d appreciate it if you could share some of your experiences; I’m looking to get to the US within the next 2 years once I get my CFA charter. I work in the FO (non-managerial position) of a large multi-national investment management company, UK based. Options are likely to be via: my employer, the skilled immigrant visa or, if I’m lucky, the DV lottery. Thanks in advance for your feedback. Cheers, K

I guess the safest bet is to come thru your employer. That way you come here with a job, get time for initial adjustment and then could look out for another job to your best liking. For skilled immigrant visa (H1-B), you need to have your potential new employer file this petition for you. Which means, you first have to look for a willing employer in the US and then that employer needs to file this petition for you and then govt has to approve that. In the current or near future scenario, I guess it will be difficult for any potential employer to get petition approved for Finance related jobs. This is just my opinion.

And good luck for DV Lottery, mate.

Cheers for the advice rus1bus, DV lotto - got to be in it to win it

Kakane - Do you come from West Africa, and in particular Ghana?

Joe2010, nope, I’m from the UK. You? K

US, currently in Oz. Was in West Africa when I was in Grade 4/5 and had classmates with similar names “Kaka”, “Kakane” and “Kafui”.

Don’t ask mo34 for advice, this country is an absolute sh!thole according to him.

Kakane - got that nickname on the piss in the US for some reason, too dazed and confused at the time to remember…lol Joe20100 - you’re in Perth? Heard you’re about to fly to Bali (Kuta beach??) right?..if you’re surfing I’m jealous as… Mo34 - I’ll bear that in mind, cheers mate. K

Just wondering how you manage your job at this level of thinking and intellect? Do you really have a job or my taxes maintain your no value lifestyle?

Joe2010, You in Perth? Or have I misread a previous thread? K

Yes.

How’s the economy in WA holding up? Starting to ride the mining boom again, or is economic activity muted? I’m torn between planning for a move to the US in 2 years (once I get my CFA charter) or to Oz, depends how difficult it proves to get a US visa. Oz is probably the easy option for me visa wise. Ever since visiting Perth, I’ve always had it in my mind to go back some day, and if I can keep sharks out of my mind, surf Margaret River in 4-6ft surf…that would be peachy! K

Pretty well, I reckon in two years things will be good. There are various LNG projects going - Gorgon, Pluto and Mining. The gals are also hot, and Asian variety of late.

Nice one JOE2010, Hot asian babes, all tanned up from the WA sunshine…was there for 4 weeks (near Trigg beach) a few years back, constant cloudless skies! LNG projects - yep, that Gorgon project is really going to put Oz on the map; strategically positioned for the Chinese too! Did you find it straightforward to get a visa for Oz? K

Have a look at www.immi.gov.au. If you are a pommy life will be easier. People are less awful here, I never liked my stay in London.

Cheers JOE2010, I’ll take a look at the govt website; I’ve got the points for the visa already, just have to decide on Oz vs USA whilst completing the next two years work experience for CFA charter. You’ve already received your charter then? K

The US has been great to me and my family, I have stated my gratitude on many occasions. The way to go regarding the visa depends on how old you are, and what type of job you do. The H1-B visa program has been reduced dramatically due to the recession and the Bush administration before that. It has become so tedious that employers try to avoid getting involved in it as much as possible. I read somewhere on this forum that UK nationals have some shortcuts to work here.
