For a country with such a small population, Iceland punches well above its weight. It would be good to see them make progress. They embarrassed England at Euro 2016 and did well to get to the quarter finals there.
Iceland is no longer a surprise since they crushed Euro 2016. Russia yesterday did the final step to the round of 16, Uruguay to follow today. Curious to see if Iran can hold up against Spain today in a defensive manner!
I take it you don’t think Portugal winning should be seen as an upset? I guess you could be right. Although they’ve only ever made the quarter finals twice and they’ve never been in the final so I think they are still a bit of a long shot. Apart from Ronaldo, the team is pretty average. But they managed to win the Euros last time with a lot of draws and narrow wins, so it is possible.
There are many superiors teams during the first two rounds and they often being nailed in crucial moment (aka Netherlands in Brasil) and there are often the case that the title wins some team with pretty average performance during the starting matches (aka Italy many times so far. Now there is no Italy so other have a greater chances).
There was often the case that the world champion title was earned by European team when the cup have been played in Europe.
This is what people thought about last world cup in Brasil. Only South American teams had won the world cup when it was held in South America, and yet Germany came in and changed history. Same thing could happen this time around.
Croatia have a lot of good players. Not surprised they beat Argentina, and they certainly matched the physicality. Physicality is about the only thing Argentina brought to the game, in fact. Messi doesn’t seem to have any belief in the team. Their manager looks like he should be selling bail bonds.
I’m totally cool with Iceland going through as well. Make it so!
Croatia have always had extra good individuals but have not been so good as a team during the last 20 years. Now, it seems that have finally started playing like a team. Maybe, 1998 can happen again.
Otherwise, I like Argentina and support them in any other match.
A close run yesterday for both Spain and Portugal, Iran and Morocco played impressively well. Imo Group D will have the first big surprise today with Argentine being ousted.
Argentina scraped through the group. The team doesn’t look that good though – France will likely beat them in the next round. Messi’s goal yesterday was great.
slow starters have won it before. Argentina will need to click to get past better teams though. It’s almost like they have too many good players and are trying to cram them all into a system which is basically running everything through Messi.
What I find hilarious is how England are now getting their hopes up. After beating Panama.
Croatia are the real deal, they didn’t get enough credit for the performance against the Argies.
How funny was the Portugal Iran game, talk about letting emotion get the better of you.
