Would you buy a 2K car?

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/cto/1271949336.html Just sold my beamer and planning to relocate to either NYC or SFC in the next few months. Need a cheap car for the meantime. What do you guys think?

If you need a vehicle for transporation, go for it. If you need a vehicle to wow the ladies, no.

ask for the vehix report. cars with low miles that look ok and have a real low asking probably have had flood damage or something like that. Never buy a car that has flooded.

Agreed, seems awfully low mileage for a 13 year old car. Unless owner is an old lady who only drove it to church, something ain’t right. I’m a suburbanite though, some of the cityfolk might think 6,500 miles/year is about right.

looks like a good deal. I would if I needed something to get me from A to B

Can’t see what kind of car it is because of the work firewall…but I would suggest Subarus. There’s a lot of them in the NE, they are incredibly reliable, they are cheap, and parts are abundant (not the easiest to work on though). You can get a mid-90s legacy, impreza, outback for around that price that’s probably in pretty good shape. I owned one as a beater for a couple years and paid slightly more than 2K…never had one issue with the car.

Thanx… It’s a 96 Chrysler Cirrus which I have had no experience with before. I’m leaning towards asian cars for their reliability, especially at this 2K price point. any thoughts on the ones below?? Also looking at '95 Nissan Sentra and a '00 Hyundai http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/cto/1269997627.html http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/cto/1273807569.html

I have a 98 escort with 91k miles. Despite living in the burbs, I’m able to ride the train to work most days. I put 50k miles on it the first 3 years I owned it. Living in an area with decent public transportation makes a big difference.

I would go with an old Civic, cheap and reliable.

when i was right out of school, i looked at cars that were taken in drug bust and/or other illegal activities tax evasion etc. They had a bunch of pimped out cars. It was a silent auction, just drop your bid in. I know someone got an infiniti for a decent price. They also had other state vehicles, old troopers cars & pickup trucks. check in your area.

is it a clunker? guess not if it is being sold privately

UPDATE: Just bought a 1993 Toyota Camry with 170K miles. Some cosmetic issues, but brand new tires, already smoged, and reg paid until March 2010. “Defend America, Defeat Bush” bumper sticker included. I had a Camry in college and it went to 250K with no problems. I think I got a good deal for $1600, asking was $2000. Hopefully relocating in a few months.

Like you I live in the burbs with great public transportation.
