So Ted Cruz is born in Canada but is eligible to run for POTUS?

I guess there is a loophole in the Constitution if one of your parents is born in the US…

He was born to an American mother. If I remember correctly; this was the case with John McCain

I thought McCain was born on a US Navy Base in Panama.

The whole “natural born” citizen rule seems completely asinine to me. The rule implies that a kid who was born to foreign nationals and moved to the US at age 2 (and gained citizenship) is not “American” enough to be president. Give me a break.

I think the bigger problem here is that Ted Cruz is being taken seriously as a Presidential nominee…

IMO it’s no more asinine than the fact that the US (and probably some other countries) still have birthright citizenship, regardless of the nationalities of the parents. I’ve always thought of “natural born” as non-naturalized. I don’t know if thats the official definition.

Agree. For some reason all the non-insane republicans don’t express interest/get enough $$ to run for president.

Yeah you don’t need to be born in the US. George Romney was born in Mexico, and it wasn’t an issue for him.

If you don’t need to be born in US to run, then why the hell was Trump going bonkers when Obama announced his nomination - dammn fool!

Its pretty much the same country, who cares. I once read (and agree with) that it would have made more sense culturally to split North America up east to west rather than north to south. The west coast has a culture, the prairies/plains have a culture. Going to Denver (for example) feels more like home to me than going to Halifax or Montreal or even Vancouver. There is certainly much more cultural difference east-west than north-south (the Gulf coast exempted).

I could agree to that. Just give us Québec so that we, French-speaking commies, can have our socialist dream.

Because republicans.

Everybody out here in my neck of the woods is super-duper excited about it. They’re pulling their Scott Walker signs up and planting their Ted Cruz signs.

Jeb Bush never had a chance in West Texas. He’s too moderate.

^ Nice double down.

Damn. Beat me 2 it.

Let me finish that sentence…

Because republicans [are racist]

Nothing else explains how no one is talking about Ted Cruz being born to a Cuban Father and American mother. No one is talking about is Ted Cruz Cuban. We spent almost a year talking about Obama being Kenyan. Even though Obama’s mother is American, so it wouldn’t matter where he was born. But Ted Cruz has white skin so that’s all that matters.

Bobby Jindal on the other hand might want to try some skin lightening cream because Republicans are definitely going to consider him a foreigner. I bet you Jindal doesn’t even get 10% of primary votes.

Let me give you 2 examples.

Example #1: A couple from Scotland have a 1 year old child and decide to move to immigrate to the US. The child is raised in the US. He does his entire schooling and works his entire life in the US.

Example #2: A couple from Iran decide to immigrate to the US. They live there for 10 years and during that time at least one of them becomes a US citizen. They return to Iran after a decade. They then have a child born in Iran. The child is raised his entire life in Iran. This child then grows up and works in Iran. This individual never sets foot in his life in the US. At age 50, he visits his local US consulate in his country to become a US citizen. As at least one of his parents were a US citizen at the time of his birth, this individual becomes a naturalized US citizen at birth even though he never spent a day in the US.

Out of the 2 examples, only #2 is eligible to run as President of the US.

wow didnt know that much racism in america
