08 elections - most important issue

I’m curious about what everyones top 1 or 2 issues are for the 08 elections. Is there one subject that you are so focused on that it will make up your mind for which candidate to vote for this year? My guess is that most people on this board will be focused on the more financial related topics, but I could be wrong. For me Iraq and Immigration are the two front runners… Thoughts?

As an outsider looking in: 1. The Economy (taxes & trade) 2. Foreign Policy

  1. Fixing Social Security/Medicare (Can we just get rid of them?) 2) Getting out of Iraq

I would throw in the plans that the Dems have to implement a socialist healthcare system

  1. Campaign finance reform 2) Restrained fiscal policy

Yeah: 1) Does the candidate have a sensible approach to the security / civil liberties challenge. This means, does the candidate have a plan to: a) make the country safer from terrorist networks b) does this plan recognize that becoming a police state is not the answer c) does this plan involve international cooperation and restoring the US’ international credibility d) does this plan visualize a way to exit Iraq with at least a marginally functioning society there 2) Does the candidate have a plan for integrating the US positively into a globalized world Does this plan consider: a) The fact that the middle class is increasingly insecure b) Protectionism is usually counter-productive c) Social safety nets are important (health care, social security, etc.) d) Wars and government services need to be paid for.

Clinton is toast if he wins by 10%+ tonight barring a major upset. He’ll win Nevada and SC I think. Is he as apt to go after this issue in office as Hillary or Edwards (who never had a chance). Any thoughts?

Changes will be made to make health care more accessible to the poor and/or sick. Beyond that, I doubt much about the current system will change.

  1. Queers getting married 2. Queers in general.

(1) The current Recession (2) Iran Agree with CFA_Halifax if Hillary gets beat by 10+%. She would be smart to bow out and instead focus on becoming Majority Leader. She could begin to write her own legacy, not her husband’s. Republican race is going to get very interesting. If McCain, Romney, Huckleberry and Rudy stay in it, you could have them split up the states on Feb 5 and make it a real race up to the convention. Probably won’t happen, but would be fun to see.

I’m still hoping (albeit irrationally) for a late Ron Paul push. I was off the bandwagon until I watched the debates and saw how full of it everyone else is…

* Getting rid of pension accounting. Why can’t we just all have 401Ks

  1. Immigration Reform and Border Protection 2) does he/she sound like a babbling idiot and does he/she refer to what gynocologists do as “practicing their love for women”

Yeah, interesting point. She could bounce back if it’s close tonight and the Nevada unions don’t all back Obama or Edwards and she squeeks out Nevada. SC is going Obama for sure I think. Then the more or less national primary on the 5th she may have a chance. Agreed. As much as it scares me, Huckabee could win Michigan, Nevada and even Florida. He already has SC I think. It would be hard to stop him then. Playbook Rudy needs is McCain tonight, Romeny in Michigan and then a win in Nevada, and then SC might be more in play and may then only go marginally Huckabee. Then Rudy wins Florida, and has all the momentum for super Tuesday with no other clear front runner. We’ll see what happens tonight…

  1. Environmental policies; big fan of Thomas Friedman’s idea of the Patriot Tax and Geo-Green politics 2) Personal views on the war / terrorism 3) Economic issues I haven’t found a candidate that I can support, but maybe it’s b/c I haven’t been paying that close of attention at this stage…

(1) Crying in a coffee shop about how hard it is to run for President (2) Being “picked on” by the men during Saturday night’s debate.

Did any of you see the guys who held up the “Iron My Shirt” sign? Many people are skeptical, including me, and think that Hilary’s campaign team was behind that stunt to generate more publicity.

Hilary won’t stop at anything to get into power. I don’t think that she should be classified as a woman. She just does not possess any normal feminine qualities at all (only by request of her advisors). The only good thing is that she will be easier for the Republicans to beat than Obama.

It would be a real shame for women’s rights and feminism to see that the first woman President had to ride her husbands coat tails and use his dirty tricks to become President. I agree highpark, McCain and probably even Rudy would pound her in a debate
