Was speaking to a friend of mine who got into the top schools and he recommended applying to one “backup” school for round 1, seeing how that goes, and then apply to the schools I really want to go to for round 2. Does that sound reasonable or is he talking out of his @ss? I threw out the names of the schools I’d actually consider going to and the general consensus on quality was: Top: Harvard, Penn, MIT Backup: Columbia, Virginia Don’t bother: Yale, NYU Following this argument I would apply to Columbia round 1 and Harvard, Penn, and MIT round 2.
