Any information on what the typical total comp for a post-MBA ER associate in BB was last year.? I checked the numbers in glassdoor.com and the range seems to be 150 - 190. Does that sound correct ? Thanks.
Not in this economic environment.
You mean an ER associate with an MBA at Morgan/JP/GS made less than 150K ?
It’s quite possible many BB ER associates made less than that last year. This year, I’d expect comp to be at the low end of that range.
I would sell 140 easy…95k base and ??? bonus
The OP implies there is a pay difference between post-MBA and pre-MBA Associates. Is that the case? I have never seen that. Also, a “pre-MBA” Associate fresh out of school with a BA or BS is definitely NOT making 150 - 190K in a research role, recession or not. Net, net, I don’t really understand the question.
I know most pre mba’s were making 60k-70k base and 0-25k bonus

To me, an Associate is an Associate, regardless of MBA or not. If you have experience, you will come in at a higher pay grade, but that’s it.
So , are you saying at an Associate who gets hired out of undergrad makes the same as a Wharton MBA who gets hired as an Associate ?
no the base will be higher but he is saying the work product will for the most part be the same. for instance, I have a friend that his bb has harvard mba’s on their desk as summer interns… all did something else pre mba so the 24 year old kid from the state school that is going on his 3rd year of exp is schooling this mba’s… his base is lower but actual work product is 10x better. if you were a pre mba er then I would bet money that you dont want to get a mba and come back post mba…your trying to get to buy side before mba and if not then def post mba…
Agreed that the work product will be the same. But , i am trying to get a sense of what the total comp for an MBA in an ER Associate role was last year.
Last year, a first year post MBA associate/junior analyst in ER at a BB would have made at most $130k-$140K. This is assuming no guarantees.
thats 95k base and rest in bonus… per my first post
Poor taz, trying so hard not to have his bubble burst. POP!
that’s fine. There’s always the well trodden path from sell-side to buy-side.
No material difference between a senior research associate and a MBA associate. The reason is the bonus range is fairly rigid for associates.
I don’t have an MBA, but I passed the CFA and interviewed at a BB for an Associate role last August. Total comp was in the $160-180K range (SF, not sure if NYC is the same). I turned it down and went to the buyside, which was a good thing since that bank laid a ton of people off right after I decided not to join. I also had an offer at Lehman literally weeks before it went under lol. I’m sure comp is much lower now but I can’t get specific. Personally, I would worry a lot less about money initially and a lot more about finding the right job that will help you learn and get on a good track, but that’s just me.
bromion, Did you have ER experience before you interviewed at the BB ?
Yes, about 2 years + CFA exams. I suppose that’s about the same as an MBA. I know they were interviewing MBAs for the position because they told me. I took an analyst job at a hedge fund instead.
Good for you. Congratulations on having made the jump from sell-side to buyside.I am assuming that you are on West Coast since you interviewed in SF. Hopefully , now you don’t have to get up at 4.00 for those 5.00 am morning calls.
