Honorable mentions: House of Cards, Seinfeld, Friends, Homeland.
I should mention I was not very impressed by Breaking Bad as I felt it was way overrated. Although the story is good, there were way too many “boring” episodes/moments.
If you have to take the sum total of their work probably The Simpsons.
If you are taking the average over the life of the series, I’d probably say The Leftovers. That’s kind of tough though, because there are only three seasons and other series (GoT, Sopranos, Dexter) may be great but have entire mediocre seasons that bring the average down.
Also, given the second criteria you can’t really choose series that haven’t concluded, because they could start to suck. Ex: Peaky is great so far, but I can see a scenario where it jumps the shark.
Fair point, that’s why Lost would never make the list. They had a very strong beginning but terrible last couple seasons. I guess what makes Peaky so great as well is the acting, much much better than the one in Lost.
Honourable mention to Game of Thrones which I’ve enjoyed but I can’t quite stretch to putting it on the list because it can be a bit too soap opera and the middle seasons were just people trudging about for episodes on end.
Mash probably would be up there, different style than the high budget, drama heavy GoT/bb types. But man, that’s one old show. Fun fact about the finale:
“Sometimes urban legends are true. So many people rushed to the restroom after the ending, the subsequent pressure drop from flushing toilets caused a surge in the tunnels that bring water from the Catskills to New York. So, if this happens again, remember your local utilities and pause the show early and often on your television to give the plumbing a break.”
