Yeah you should knock down the WW2, Vietnam memorials, and burn Arlington cemetery while you’re at it. Don’t forget to burn all the exhibits that reference racism in the National Museum of American History. Fuck it, just burn the whole Smithsonian. Don’t forget to burn the history books while you are at it. Or maybe you can rewrite the books like in 1984? Who sounds like the Nazi in this scenario?
Dear Colleagues, We extend our deepest sympathy to the families of those who were killed or injured last weekend in Charlottesville. CFA Institute is at the forefront of leading ethics and education in the finance industry, and what we witnessed this past weekend in Virginia is the exact opposite of what we stand for. The values of the city align with our own – values of welcoming refugees, hosting a marketplace of ideas, inclusivity, empathy and respect. It is deeply saddening that racial inequality is still a pervasive fact of life. We will continue to fight against all forms of hatred and bigotry, which has no place in our society. We urge our colleagues and fellow professionals in the financial sector to take a role in eradicating violence and intolerance by promoting inclusivity and diversity in the workplace. When our Charlottesville community begins its healing process, we know that it will remain vibrant and strong. Martin Luther King, Jr., said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.” We join with our community in ensuring that the light is made brighter, not dimmer, after this weekend’s events. Warm regards, Paul Smith, CFA President and CEO, CFA Institute
Prolly yeah, Imagine how pissed of an Irishman would be if had to walk by a statue of Margaret Thatcher everyday on the way to work.
In all seriousness that would be bad. These statues do belong in a Museum where their role, impact and what they stood for can be properly analyzed and explained so future generations don’t repeat the same mistakes.
They do not belong in public spheres of life as symbols of culture or glorification where people who said person actively fought to enslave pass by every day.
Interestingly Ryszard predicted the exact same behaviour a lot of people are displaying these days back in the 60’s, a paranoia that ‘they’ will come for ‘everything’ could lead to a point where no one backs down. History is a flat circle indeed
I really don’t care about this topic either way as I don’t know a great deal about the american civil war but are people really arguing that a statue is the same as something in a museum or in a book?
I think people should be free to express their opinion without any consequence. ISIS tore down inconvenient historical statues and now the extreme left is too. The tolerant left is by far the most intolerant.
the political spectrum is actually a circle and the far left and far right sit right next to each other. There is virtually no difference between the two in their desire to control others.
I agree, the family of General Lee (i believe) was supportive of moving his statue to a museum where it could be properly displayed with the context of his life etc etc as to not glorify him but not to forget him & the confederacy altogether. I think thats a reasonable solution.
I walked around central park the other day and there are so many statues there of random people, LOCK EM UP! Statues really should be taken down that dont rate high enough on the badass scale, there is a polish king one that is super awesome in central park
