Back on-topic (somewhat), I’m uncomfortable with the removal of statues and glossing over history. I’m certainly not a confederate sympathizer, but trying to erase what they did by removing them from public view isn’t the right way to move forward. Leave their statues up and use it as an educational experience.
And I do put a fair amount of the blame for what happened in Charlottesville on the anti-protesters. Once they showed up this was obviously going to turn violent. Anyone that says otherwise is an idiot. It would have been smarter, safer, and more productive to make fun of the white nationalist on social media, on TV, and any other means than in-person…with baseball bats. Not to mention they gave Trump an out. He got to say “many sides” and “good people on both sides” and all that. Had the anti-protesters stayed home, he would have had to defend (or condemn) just the white nationalists.
Bottom line is racial tensions are too damn high. Everyone is to blame. The far left is authoritarian, the far right is bat s h it insane, and we have a president that likely has severe mental issues.

To your statue point, I found it helpful to realize when a lot of them were erected, pointing to why they were erected. The early 1900s and 1960s, when the KKK came back, lynchings increased and of course the civil rights movement picked up steam. Kinda makes you wonder… except not really because it seems blatantly obvious why those statues exist.
It was interesting to see a very different point of view when, a few years ago, I visited Washington DC for the first time. I visited Arlington Cemetery where I learned that it used to be Robert E. Lee’s estate.
Coming from Texas (I live about 1/4 mile from Robert E. Lee High School in Midland, TX), I had always heard of the virtues of General Lee (the man, not the car). And I had heard that he was one of the greatest military generals in history, and that he had to choose whether to defend his home state of Virginia. I also heard that the Civil War was fought because of a difference of opinion. And the fact that it came to war was unfortunate, but a necessary evil. It was a war of brother against brother.
The tour guide at Arlington had a different take. In her mind, General Lee was a traitor who fought against the nation in the Civil War, and the Confederacy was a bunch of rebel assholes who had to be taught a lesson by whipping them into shape. (Noted - the tour guide was black. If that means anything.)

Honestly they’re just statues. Take em all down for all I care. However it should be done at the ballot box or by elected representatives.
I always laugh at stuff like this. What exactly do people get by the existence or non-existence of a monument? In either case, does it really make your life better or worse? Seriously I’d be fine taking down every statue in the country and blowing up Mt Rushmore.
