We abolished slavery just under 150 years ago, and haven’t had any racial discrimination since, as proven by a few intermarriages over the last 15 decades.
I wonder what it is like to be the Chinese, where everyone is…well …the same.
In China, if you’re one in a million, there are about 1300 people just like you.

I can’t claim originality on that one… Tom Friedman (The World Is Flat) said it first…
I think Tom Friedman’s The World Is Flat is more hype than quality. In particular, he overrated the signficance of outsourcing . E.g. India has a labor force of approx. 450 million people. 1.5 million of them work directly in IT/outsourcing field, 3 million work indirectly for the IT/outsourcing field. That’s about only 1% of the work force. But if you read Friedman’s book, he gave people’s an impression that India is coming and it’s gonna eat US’ lunch.

Coming from India, I see that language & script, religion, food habits, dress sense , architecture, everything changes dramatically ever few hundred kms. Is China as diverse?
China is very diverse too. Only that the communist party tried to destroy all diversity (what else would a communist govt do ?). If China doesnt splinter into Han china,Moslem Xingjiang and Tibet, then there has to be be atleast some sort of civil war kind of disruption from which will arise a better socio political freedom - a peaceful transition sounds impossible. I guess in time it will occur. It is just the fate of nations such as China one thing not in favor of India is a very populist govt controlled by votebanks and driven by the lowest common denominator.if the politicians can somehow stop meddling, its got a terrific run ahead of it as well. fingers crossed.

I realised Friedman was a lunatic when he proclaimed that world peace can be had by making everyone else in the world like Americans -especially middle eastern folks. i love the way Bill Bonner dumps on him from time to time. http://www.dailyreckoning.com.au/green-election/2007/04/27/

hey careerchange, could you please drop in an email to me : dsylexicdesi at yahoo.com?. i believe we are probably in the same boat @CFA and career changes. thanks
so,does anyone think that globalization will reverse /reduce if transportation costs (fuel) become more and more burdensome as oil resources are used up some years down the line?. i tend to believe that this may impact china more since it relies on physical shipments of its exports more than India which exports services over the internet.
Yes, I was being sarcastic in that quote. My point was that it can take a looong time after official discrimination is abolished before discrimination ends.
sorry, i should have known better , bchadwick - your other posts obviously reflect your views very clearly.
http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/e68ab572-8a3e-11dd-a76a-0000779fd18c.html Nice article on comparison of the two. India needs to solve a number of fundamental problems before it morphs into an economy like China. Democracy, Bureaucracy and the thinking has to transform in a big way.
