Drinking a requirement for sucess in Finance

SomeWhat Damaged…i find it hard to avoid that, I don’t think I’m in the wrong industry and to be honest, however not drinking is something that I can easily comply with… ronyusa…*sigh* it’s people like you that make me glad I live in Canada, luckily I’ve found that we’re a lot less racist up here! not trying to be mean…

and by the way, if you are muslim, then drink or no drink…football or no football…you are screwed anyway…sorry…not trying to be mean…just harsh reality; get used to it! ronyusa, most people think I am Christian. I have roots in the former soviet union. (which if it didn’t break up would be 40% muslim) I don’t tell people my religion because this industry has no room for religion. Its all about the cash.

I drink so thats a nonissue. The football chatter gets me. I have tried to watch/follow it to blend in, but I still don’t care for it. How do you handle it?

well, I dont actually watch the games…I’m not that intent on blending in, luckily I have some friends that are avid football fans and they normally keep me up to date on the latest happenings, enough that I can throw in a somewhat relevant comment once in a while:P; headlines, major upsets etc. I dont pretend to be a fan, but it never hurts to have a little more material for small talk…

I think there was a thread about this (too lazy to search) and I don’t mean to hijack cfa_toronto’s thread, but it’s never easy! I never try to fake it because I’ll look like an idiot. I’ll typically wait for change in subject. I always seem to get caught in conversations with walking football encyclopedias. You know the guys that will reference some play from a regular season game in 1993. It’s like WTF! First, I don’t even know the players you just mentioned, second, are you watching tape to garner some edge in your fantasy league?

What about golf? Do you find that knowing how to play golf is useful? I’ve heard its great for networking.

“What about golf? Do you find that knowing how to play golf is useful? I’ve heard its great for networking.” SS, now I just think you’re joking around…

r u serious?.. americans… ronyusa Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > you should put your belief/principle first… if > you don’t drink, whatever the reason might be, > don’t start drinking just to get along… and > don’t order a coke in a low-ball glass to make it > look like alcohol…respect yourself! > > and by the way, if you are muslim, then drink or > no drink…football or no football…you are > screwed anyway…sorry…not trying to be > mean…just harsh reality; get used to it!

I think golf is overrated for networking. My boss has never played a game in his life and does pretty well. It’s not a bad idea to have a set of clubs and be good enough to play a decent round. Opportunities do come up to shoot with prospects or clients.

SS I was being sarcastic (about the wrong industry thing) but I’ll ask again, how does islam view capital gains?..and is it ok for YOU to charge interest to others, ie: on behalf of your firm? I’m assuming you don’t go to the casino either (as a muslim, my understanding is that you are not allowed to gamble). I’m punjabi myself, actually, and have a lot of close muslim friends which sucks because I absolutely love to drink and would be dead inside without it. Life would be oh so ever bland. Don’t worry, I’ll slip you some rum n coke, I won’t tell anyone.

golf is useful, well atleast where i am (southeast usa). Our marketing guy regularly goes out to play golf with clients and prospects. maybe its not so important in colder places?

Why must people generalize…I’m American, I don’t drink or eat pork, I’m not Jewish or Muslim, and I repect other people’s beliefs. There are others in the U.S. who are like me, no need to throw blanket statements out there.

I have to admit, drinking and golf are pretty much the reason I got into the industry. Well, and impressing chicks with my ability to sit in the same spot for 6 hours straight without even going to the washroom.

Turkish, you got me  Actually, I’m trying to get over ronyusa’s comment:P

SomewhatDamaged, what religion is punjabi?

Don’t even get me started on that Fantasy League. Thats another subject I avoid like the plague!

cfa_toronto_on Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > SomewhatDamaged, what religion is punjabi? I wasn’t trying to imply that punjabi is a religion, but I see how my comment could have been extrapolated as such. I do know that muslim punjabi’s exist, but there aren’t many. To clarify, I’m actually half hindu and half sikh.

"I am not willing to start watching just to have something to talk about. How do you handle it? " Know the favorite teams of a couple of the guys you work with. That way, on Monday morning you can check real quick online to see whether they won or lost… walk up to the guy and say “hey, tough loss against _____” or “I heard you guys looked pretty good against ______”. If the other guy is a diehard football fan he will talk about his own team for as long as you let him, and you’ve killed two birds with one stone – you just gained a couple of good-ole-boy points with that particular fan, and next time you talk football with somebody else you can parrot some of the details and sound like you know what you’re talking about.

SomewhatDamaged: To be honest, I don’t know…it’s not something I have a lot of knowledge about and I wouldn’t want to misinform you. I tried googling it and there a few interesting articles on the subject! Also, no casinos for me…but I do have Muslim friends who drink and some who gamble, at the end of the day, people do make their personal choices which is why not drinking is both a personal decision and a religious one. Didn’t mean to sound defensive in response to your comment, but I did have my guard up! bryant: I agree…I apologize if my comment also came across as a generalization…lucky sentiments like ronyusa’s aren’t as common nowadays.
