Drinking

Yep I once read a way to maximize my life expectancy. (For compounding interest of course). Drinking two beers or wine daily does extend life expectancy. Apparently it’s more effective than exercise.

Those studies are guesses at best and fake news at worst

Wanted to mention that President Trump has never had a drink.

and he’s pretty fat… so, your point is…?

Check out this link from the CDC on the effects of binge drinking. If moderate drinking leads to cirrhosis of the liver, then that would be a leading cause of death, but it isn’t, doesn’t even the make the top 10. Keep hitting those CFA books, especially the sections on cognitive errors.

https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/the-top-10-causes-of-death

Put down the bottle Malee! Tracksuit was talking about getting hammered 2-3 times a YEAR and you throw at him a death statistic about side-effects of binge drinking 3-4 times a MONTH.

In addition your inference that regular drinking doesn’t lead to cirrhosis of the liver because liver cirrhosis isn’t a top 10 cause of death is incredibly flawed. You should probably reread the sections on cognitive errors as well.

Right, so my point is that is that cirrhosis liver is a virtual death sentence. So if moderate drinking always leads to cirrhosis, then that should turn up in the death stats. Morever, moderate drinking may lead to cirrhosis liver, but in fact, you are almost certain to die from one of the top 10 causes before that happens…according to the WHO.

Considering that 70% of American adults drink less that 2.17 servings (3 lowest deciles don’t drink) of alcohol per week, your “moderate” consuming appears to be quite high risk.

And cirrhosis does not appear on the list since most of the people don’t drink the quantities that you consider “moderate”. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2014/09/25/think-you-drink-a-lot-this-chart-will-tell-you/?utm_term=.50941f6ef348

But be my guest, keep having that 1-2 servings of alcohol each day and call it “moderate”.

I think it’s cute that a forum of analysts think that losing weight is as simple as calories in vs calories out.

That’s some of the worst trolling I’ve ever seen, and I was basically born on the internet.

To quote Systematic, I’m dead serious

I always thought that it was grams in vs. grams out.

Well, okay then - in your terms of pure “weight”, if you’re saying that eating in a caloric deficit doesn’t make you lose weight, what does eating in a caloric surplus do? I’m all ears.

Please, enlighten us on how to lose “weight”. Also, please define “weight” when you do so.

Pure Ralpher?

I agree with Griingo here. That’s like saying “investing success is as easy as ‘buy low, sell high”. Yeah…it is technically true…I guess.

This, from the accountant no less.

My point is that it’s a broad brush approach that’s designed to be used as a very general guide. Somehow that’s been lost over the years and people take it as gospel and bleat it as if it’s an absolute fact ignoring all nuance. I’d expect better from analysts in high finance.

Hormones, the type of calories consumed and when they’re consumed have a huge effect on fat/muscle gain/loss.

Dear God… If you burn 3000 calories in a day, and you eat 2,900 calories worth of pop-tarts you will still lose weight/fat just as you would eating 2,900 calories worth of salmon (which is a ton of salmon btw).

Do yourself a favor, and go do a google (image) search on “IIFYM Results”. Micronutrients can come from a bottle.

edit: here I did it for you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFTT-Nvqq6E

The thing is that a lot of people get lost in the weeds. A prime example is my obese colleague who is very concerned about whether he can eat a banana after 9pm or not. Yeah, maybe type of calories and meal timing have some very minor effect on weight gain/loss but in the grand scheme of things it comes down to burning more calories than you consume. This is not rocket science.

Calorie in, calories out is much more similar to “You should save more than you spend.” Simple, not easy. Unlike investing successfully, practically anyone can lose weight.
