"Gala" attire

so i’m going to some high society gala and have no idea what is proper attire. It is not ‘black tie’ so don’t need a tux. All I have are lame jos bank business suits, but I’m thinking these won’t cut it. is there like a cool non business suit brand that i obviously know nothing about? keep in mind i live in podunk so my only option is along the lines of macy’s or banana republic.

A podunk gala? Maybe shine yer cowboy boots and a new stetson?

Just wear a suit I guess. What matters is it fits you well. I bet some people will even show up without a suit.

When is it? You aren’t getting a new suit tailored in time if it’s soon so I wouldn’t even bother. Do your current suits fit well? What’s the problem with those?

you can always rent a suit/tux these days

I once took a risk and wore a cravat, and that probably was the most successful event for me in terms of meeting people. Plenty of waspy older execs mentioned it and it was a conversation starter that led to other fun discussions. YMMV.

Wear a tuxedo.

Gees!

It’s not black tie so I don’t expect any tuxes. The other issue is none of my suits fit. I bought a bunch just before I got serious about working out. I’d have to take the pants in around 3 inches which probably wouldn’t work. All I have that fits are sport coats.

Always dress as though you have somewhere _ better _ to go when you leave here.

Define “podunk”. I’m willing to bet I’ve got you beat–either now or where i grew up.

There’s always your wife’s bra. I’m sure you’d look good in that. At the very least, you’ll make an impression.

More seriously, maybe this is the time to buy a suit that fits your new chiseled body and suckable abs.

maybe hit up zara or just wear slim fitting slacks and french cuffs and a skinny tie? do you have dark blue slacks - could do a light tan shoe / belt combo just throwing out some ideas

Black dress shirt, top two buttons undone, no tee. Gray unpatterned suit jacket or sport coat. Dark jeans. Black loafers, single piece of shaped leather like Bruno Magli. Black belt with substantial silver-accented buckle. Pocket square, preferably purple – but no tie. Aviator sunglasses. Get a suntan beforehand. And my god, man, own the look. Walk in there like you own the joint. And if anyone there sniffs at the boldness, f**k 'em.

^Best piece of advice ever given, but in the wrong thread.

what is this las vegas? im assuming this is a movie quote i’m not getting personally, I hate black dress shirts… they really only look half decent with the sleeves rolled up no tee, designer jeans, and black dress shoes — with that said I do not own a single black dress shirt

^ I don’t know where that quotes from either. But it sounds exactly like one of my d-bag former co-workers, aside from he always wore really scuffed and crappy looking shoes.

^ As I said, this is where the f**k 'em piece comes in.

shoes are everything. if people can’t find a nice pair of leathers, a clean pair of high top vans or high top nikes will do the trick

black dress shirt in a formal setting = get mistaken for the help.

black dress shirt in the night club… d-bag.
