Must resist…

Is it still impulse buying if you post it on AF before buying it? With all due respect to Breitling, the yellow makes it look like something you would buy at JCPenney for $15.
I got a watch for Christmas…One of my dad’s old ones he had re-done and passed on to me:
With regards to that watch - I like it a lot, but I also agree that the yellow makes it look like it costs a lot less than it does.
I was thinking more like $19.99 at target + $150 to have somebody take apart and add Breitling logo.
Yes, the yellow is controversial. But I think the ostentatious color is in the spirit of Breitling.
(There is also red or black version, but those are not on sale… probably because of the color.)
I’ll add my 2 cents…the watch looks cheap.
That watch says Junior level…you need a watch that says…“like a Boss!”
Did you get the automatic or the old school manual one? If you watch Apollo 13, there is a scene where they strap a Speedmaster to the *outside* of the space suit. It’s interesting how over engineered watch casings are - but I guess that is sort of the point.
Looks cheap. Plastic and yellow = epic failure
I don’t like the yellow much. If you’re going to drop that much on a watch, you better LOVE it.
mehh…imitation P.O. why not just buy a genuine P.O. used for a little higher price? This one might look better on a steel bracelet, but i’d go used P.O. over superocean for sure.
Pass on that (unless your name is scuba steve, in that case buy it)
In one of the watch threads here I fell in love with IWC watches… need $7k+ of extremely disposeable income to pull the trigger though
IWC does look nice… and, oh, look, this one is 20% off at Ashford.com:
I like the name: Grand Complication Watch. Presumably, it’s the watch you receive at a wedding.
Complications refer to the number of functions that the watch does. For instance, chronograph, date, moon phase, repeater, calendar, tourbillon, etc. It is quite difficult to build many complications into a mechanical watch, especially since everything needs to be crammed into a relatively small case. All this stuff needs to be assembled by hand. So, multiple complications can quickly increase the price of the watch.
I kind of remember the old watch thread with the IWC Portuguese. I think the watch in that picture was much more expensive than $7k. I think you can get date and chronograph for about $7k (with dealer discount), but the more complicated models are quite a bit more expensive. Might have to check prices - not 100% sure.
Since you already have a Rolex, this watch is a good complement. I’m a believer of having one dress watch and another more sporty / weekend-ish. Also not exactly a fan of bright yellow, but sub-$2k sounds good for a Breitling.
I am actually thinking of selling the Rolex. I’m getting bored of it, and it seems like everyone has one of these. Omega Planet Ocean is on my short list, and also IWC (Porto or Portuguese). Another watch that caught my eye is this “entry level” JLC. I don’t know if I will be willing to take the price jump though, and it’s pretty impossible to find used. Maybe see how my bank account is doing after bonus season… It would be a special treat though.
I wear a beater Seiko for casual events, as it has some sentimental value. If not, I might have gone the 2 nice watch route.
Oh, the other interesting watch lately is the TAG Heuer Carrera with 1887 movement (not the calibre 16). People are saying it’s the revival of the brand, since TAG claims to have designed that movement in house. I don’t think I am interested enough to buy though.
Looks like you can do a IWC potruguese startings at $7K: http://www.jomashop.com/iwcportuguese.html
Or a Portofino @ 5k: http://www.jomashop.com/iwc-portofino-mens-watch-iw391001.html
Check out the new Rolex Milgauss line. I had never consider Rolex before because of their I’m-70-and-can’t-see-anymore date lenses. Things changed with the Milgauss and I pulled the trigger last year. Definitely suitable for someone in his 20s or 30s. It’s like ~6K if you find a good dealer. I later sold another watch to avoid the whole 6K+ hit.
Would anyone ever Ebay one of these? Or is it too much of a risk?
I havent looked but I’d assume that you can save a few grand because there’s probably a stigma against it, because they’re luxury goods. Or is it like guitars where old can be better than good, or the factory it was made makes a difference, or certain years have more value?
Does it tell time?
From what I have seen, Ebay prices are comparable to most gray market prices. Ebay might be a bit cheaper here and there, but the difference is usually small. One thing to consider is that you usually don’t get a manufacturer warranty if you buy from the gray market. This is a way for manufacturers to control supply. For many brands (like Rolex), there are no authorized internet dealers. That is, every internet purchase is gray market.
With watches, some years or models are more rare or coveted, and thus, have different secondary market prices. However, I haven’t seen too many watches that are more expensive than the equivalent new model. Might be because new watch prices keep going up.
