It’s nice and dandy remaining in the top 3 and schooling guys 2/3rds your age if your name is Michael Chang but when you are the most decorated player in tennis history and the last time you won a grand slam tournament Obama was running for reelection then reality is talking to you. There is a reason Federer makes it deep in tournaments and can’t finish the job. His body can’t withstand 2 weeks of 3 out of 5 set tournaments. That has been the case for several years, not a recent phenomenon. It’s obvious to anyone who isn’t a blind supporter. I also enjoy the beautiful way he plays the game but I’d rather watch a rerun of the 2008 US open final than watch the current version of someone huffing and puffing to the finish line. 0 GS in the last 4 years and 1 GS in the last 6 years. I don’t want to remember Federer for his longevity, I wanted to remember him for his dominance.
BTW, how the f*ck is Michael Chang’s net worth $2 billion dollars?
But you’re forgetting the fact that he really fucking loves playing tennis. That’s the underlying reason that he’s the GOAT.
I think everyone would concede that he’s dropped in standard and he can’t last 2 weeks of 5 set matches but he’s still up there and he’s probably doing it for the love of the game at this stage. Seems like there’s more upside for him to continue playing the game than there is downside of some fans suffering from recency bias and forgetting that he’s the GOAT.
What a great performance from Murray. He definitely is one of the greatest returners of serve that’s played the game, he had absolutely no business returning some of those serves.
It was a slightly strange match to watch as all bar one of Murray’s service games were pretty straight forward. Then when he was returning if he got himself into the point he was clearly superior in rallies. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen a grand slam finalist that displayed the lack of precision that Raonic did.
Having said that Raonic did himself proud and clearly has a winning mentality, he had some great holds in the 2nd.
Good to see some more aggression from Murray, he’s really developed his mentality past the petulance in his younger days. I really hope he can push on from this point and initiate a proper rivalry with Djokovic by taking a few more grand slams off him before the inevitable discovery that Djokovic is a massive drugs cheat.
Raonic is probably the least well-rounded player to be on Centre court in a long time. Aside from his massive serve there wasn’t much going on for him, his game is brutish and short, and he lacked intelligence on the ball. Shot selection was pretty poor IMO and he made a lot of unforced errors. I think you can chaulk some of down to nerves - he’ll show up in the finals again but he really needs to work on the finesse side of the game. Still glad to see a hometown boy in the final, though I feel Murray got an (relatively) easier title.
Murray found a different level the 2nd half of the season but I was surprised how bad Djokovic was yesterday.
I felt bad for Raonic on Saturday. He was so close and his ground game was getting much better throughout the game, he seemed really nervous at points so once he gets used to playing finals and big games he’s going to be pretty lethal, even if he does look like a stretched child.
I hope Murray can win the Aussie, losing 5 finals has got to be tough.
Great win for Murray especially after battling for nearly four hours the day before against robot Raonic. To beat a fresh 5 time champ in Djokovic in straight sets is impressive.
Djokovic has definitely lost it mentally over the last few months. Winning takes its toll and he is expected to win every tournament he plays. I think finally the pressure is getting to him.
Murray is misunderstood I think because he acts like a little brat on the court at times but I have heard from good sources there is no nicer guy off the court. He is a very generous guy as well off the court. I remember when he won Wimbledon the first time he donated a good chunk of his prize money to charity.
Murray is the biggest whiner in sports. When you start complaining because some dude is chewing too loud in row 56, you are a douche.
As for Raonic, he doesn’t have the making of a champion. He might squeak out a major one day if all falls in place but I don’t see anything more from him. His biggest gift to Canadian tennis is putting the sport on the map in the mainstream, which has already paid dividends as his younger fans (Aliassime and Shapovalov) have won junior major titles.
The biggest whiner in sports goes to Ronaldo. Murray is not even in the same league as that cry baby. I wish Raonic showed a little more personality on and off the court. He strikes me as a really boring guy that lives, sleeps and breaths tennis. That attitude has propelled him to near the top of the game, but I wish he was a bit more of a character.
Must be fucking annoying with twats flashings cameras at you when you’re serving in a huge game. The US Open is ridiculous for noise during matches, people have no class.
His issues with the overhead camera thing is quite funny though.
Federer having to retire 3 years ago and being GOAT are not mutually exclusive. This is a classic lesson on how more people should listen to my advice.
