If Federer had any pride left he would retire

Let it be known, that today on Sunday, January Twenty Ninth, of The Year Two Thousand Seventeen, I comp_sci_kid, declare the utter and certain victory over former trader. This thread will be sealed and forever stored as a reminder of this victory.

Roger Federer’s long-awaited 18th Grand Slam clinches status as greatest ever

I can’t wait to see what former trader comes up with as a rebuttal.

#FedGOAT

Nice to see the apologists now have a bone to chew on (albeit a small one) as this thread has been heavily one sided in my favor since its creation and I started to get bored.

I learned a long time ago that it’s impossible to debate with passionate sports fans as they are inherently biased. I on the other hand have no horse in this race and can speak rationally. Like I mentioned earlier in this thread, being GOAT and having to retire back in 2013 is not mutually exclusive. In fact, I believe he is GOAT too, so that’s a moot point.

Let’s look at the cold hard facts. 1 GS in 5 years, 2 in the last 7 years. That’s awesome for 97% of tennis players, but we’re talking about the GOAT here, so the standards should be higher. Going 1 for the last 19 is mediocre for a player at that level. The only way I admit defeat is if he has an Agassi like resurgence, which means a few more GS.

Federer now has 18 GS in 19 years. I used to believe he was head and shoulders above Pete Sampras (who is at 14 GS in 15 years and actually won his last GS). Now Federer is only a head above him and Nadal.

Kudos to Koufax, Jim Brown and Barry Sanders. I hope to add the name of Usain Bolt soon. Federer missed the boat.

Literally every pundit out there is calling this win over Nadal at age 35 his crowning achievement.

So he had to retire in 2013 to keep GOAT title?

Well for me,GOAT fits in even more perfectly for Fed. This was a crowing achievement without a doubt! Bring back the grass courts of the old, then he even might win the Wimbledon this time around.

Now you are just talking like a typical arm chair sports fan that has never picked up a racquet. You were wrong on this FT, just let it go, it is ok to be wrong now and then even for a rational mind.

I still think Laver is GOAT. I don’t have a horse in this race either. To come back from a six month layoff and win a major, beating four top 10 players along the way. Incredible.

Borg won 11 majors in 8 years. He is the GOAT by your logic.

FT is exactly an armchair sports fan. Do you have any idea how hard it is to win 7 best 3 of 5 matches in a row against 4 top 10 players, 3 of which went 5 sets at the age of 36 after taking 6 months off from knee surgery? Nope?? Didn’t think so

Yeah FT doubling down on an opinion that has been proven to be wrong is just pigheaded and stupid.

Congrats to Federer anyway. And Serena too. Great achievements by both to still be around winning in their mid-30s.

I would have been okay with him just never replying to this thread again, but now he’s made it worse. He has surpassed every other tennis player of all time, even his rivals consider him the GOAT. People 1000x more qualified consider him the GOAT. He will be the GOAT until someone surpasses his records, just as he did to Pete. He has lost more finals and semi finals in that dry spell than you have watched in your life. And despite all your chirping, he will retire as the GOAT this year with yet another title on his mantlepiece. Next thing you know you’ll say he isn’t the GOAT unless he wins the Grand Slam in his final year.

Am I the only one who sees that FT said “In fact, I believe he is GOAT too”?

Rereading some of his posts, maybe we are a bit harsh on FT. But if Fed listened to him, the tennis world would be a much more boring place. He is the GOAT and he will go out on top this year.

When you are reduced to personally attacking the messenger instead of the message, you are essentially conceding you have nothing worthwhile to add.

It’s funny you mention Serena because her trajectory the last 5 years is the exact type that would have changed my mind if Federer had anything close to it (I am fully aware the women’s circuit is less competitive). Serena has been consistently dominant up until today. If there was a similar trend in Federer’s case instead of a one off slam, I would have had a change of heart.

Cool. I also think he is GOAT.

Once again Higgy showing why he is a top 3 poster (alongside Ohai and the late great bchad). Not necessarily because he might agree with me but because he shows basic reading comprehension skills and is level headed.

It’s as if I’m debating children who snap as soon as I criticize their idol and get all emotional about it. Federer fans are mostly insecure of his GOAT crown, that’s why they continually bring it up. I’ve never heard Jordan or Gretzky fans go out of their way to scream “GOAT” everytime you mention their names.

From 2004 to mid 2010, Federer won 15 out of a possible 28 slams. 15/28 is a remarkable feat that might never be duplicated in our lifetime. One of the greatest stretches in any sport. Since mid 2010, he is 2/25, including 1/19 since this thread started. If you look at the full portrait, overall he is still GOAT in my book despite the last stage of his career (7 years) where he has displayed average success for a great player. It’s like he was good enough to stay among the best in the world but not good enough to beat the best. His last 7 years makes him more vulnerable for some player in the future making a claim for his GOAT crown.

The reason I started this thread is because I didn’t want to get to the day where Federer winning a GS would be considered a remarkable feat after it being expected of him for so long.

I didn’t insult you personally. I called what you said pigheaded and stupid. Which I stand over, even if it’s maybe a little harshly worded given that this is ultimately a pretty frivolous conversation!

Anyway, we’ll have to agree to disagree. For me, Federer has only enhanced his legacy by playing on for the last few years and ultimately winning an 18th slam. Most people seem to agree with that, you have a different take on it. Fair enough.

I’m coming at this as a tennis fan. Would the Australian open final have been more entertaining if it was Nadal versus Wawrinka instead? Not in my opinion. Would more people have watched? Nope. Would it have got more press coverage? No. Would we be talking about it here? No.

So Fed staying the game is good for his legacy, bank balance and the sport overall.
