Band 5 fail.

51%-70%: Derivatives and Fixed Income

>70%: Econ and Ethics

This is definitely a humbling experience after passing L1 in December. Really disappointed and embarrassed by my performance, but I’m looking forward to passing next year.

Congratulations to those who passed.

for those that use kaplan, did you just purely use their notes for studying, or you’d used their videos as well?

Passed with Kaplan. Just notes, no videos (used the essential package).

Hey @losingmyedge, was in exact same boat as you 3 years ago. Failed band 3 after passing level 1 in December…and then went on to fail it 2 more times…4th time writer this year and passed it safely. My failure was mainly because of lack of time off from work (no family or laziness issues). Came pretty close to passing on attempt 2 and 3. Not sure if I would have the fuel to do it again if I’d failed but here are a few tips, if they help. I would say - take some time off, relax for now. But immediately write down what you feel you did wrong since your memory is still fresh. You can check in with this list to see if you are making the same mistakes again this year while you study.

Chart your schedule - I can’t stress the importance of this. Doesn’t have to be perfect - but have a rough blueprint. I started with Schweser (Nov), made notes for myself which took a good 3 months (MS word), started reviewing notes and doing Sch EOC problems (spend practice time according to topic weights but don’t entirely ignore low weight topics either - they can be easy points), filled in any gaps in my notes using the CFAI books because Sch doesn’t cover some very critical concepts in depth, I felt. Then did the CFAI EOC questions… again and again. If you are short on time, focus on the CFAI EOC questions. To engrain the formulas, wrote out the formula before attempting each problem - no matter how many times I repeated the same problem. Made solid cue cards to reference at any time instead of pulling out my notebook. Practiced all of May and adjusted my schedule based on areas of weaknesses. Psychologically, since the process can be draining (and for a 4th time writer, demoralizing) - built a list of reasons on what got me started on pursuing the charter and looked at it for any quick doses of motivation.

Took the week before the exam off. Stopped studying at noon on Thursday of the week of (put all books in basement - no temptation to open the notes). Watched Happy Gilmore on Friday.

I respect your thought on doing it for the education and not just the letters. That’s what got me into it too. Best wishes on the new family member. And good luck for next year!

Passed - Third Time Winner! I must have been on the cusp of >70% for the heavier weighted topics… good thing I didn’t “punt” on any of them! Looking forward to seeing 46% of you at Level III.

For those that didn’t get it this time around, keep at it and perseverance will payoff.

I did the revision classes with Kaplan. 6 weeks prior to exam they gave us this massive Q&A book with 124 case studies. I ripped through that whole book and did about 9 full length 6 hour mocks (3 invigilated as I have trouble doing a 6 hour mock independently).

I went through the schweser video lectures and went back to main CFA or Schweser books to stuff I had trouble with i.e. Valuing Currency Swaps.

Don’t pay more for Schweser L3 practice exams. As you’ll soon read in the L3 forums, Schweser is off (somewhat) on the PM practice exams and even more off on the AM (essay) practice exams. Best avoid them and stick to the ones offered by CFAI - the institute offers much more on L3 than L2 and L1, particularly to practice the essay part. Schweser notes I thought were fine - but then again I don’t know yet if I passed

Passed. Band 7 retaker.

<50 - AI, FI, Quant

51-70 - FRA

>70 - CF, DER, ECON, Equity, Ethics, PM

Started mid Jan. Only CFAI readings I did was the new PM ones. I did all topic tests multiple times, 6 Kaplan mocks, 1 CFAI mock (73M, 67A), and 2 Wiley mocks.

Good luck to all. Milestone.

I passed, can someone explain the “bands”. How do you know what band you were?

thanks. Good luck to all on L 3

You’re only assigned a “Band” if you do not pass- ie, if you’re band 10, you’re in the top 10% of the people who did not pass. Band 1 would be the lowest.
