Paid Maternity and Paternity Leave

You are so far out of your wheelhouse. CO2 is not even part of smog. The irrational negative obsession with CO2 takes away resources that could be used to keep the air clean. It really is a travesty. History will not be kind to AGW zealots.

so you support the energy intensity of flying planes and don’t think that is something we should even think about?

airplanes directly inject more than just CO2 into the atmosphere…

^Ghibli breathes CO2

Sure, but certainly not a major concern when it comes to pollution. The new engines are fairly clean burning. The old stuff will eventually be phased out. The concerns about the contrails is fun to read, but I find it silly given all the other factors affecting climate. The funny thing is we have spent years cleaning up the burning of stored solar energy(hydrocarbons). We were so successful that the zealots were disappointed. They had to turn to limiting CO2, the cornerstone of life, as a way to accomplish their nefarious objectives. Fortunately, we got cleaner air out of the deal, but now their efforts are detrimental to almost everyone on Earth, but the powerbrokers.

Geo speaks the truth!

For me the maximum amount of time I like being away in a row is ~10-11 days. Then I’m ready to get home and back to work. I’m going on vacation next month for 10 days. Weekend, work week, and Memorial Day weekend all strung together using only 5 vacation days.

Plus, given a finite number of vacation days, say I had 4 weeks off, I’d rather take 4 week long vacations than 2 two week vacations.

^ I would agree with 4x1 week over 2x2 weeks, but I certainly wouldn’t turn down 4 weeks plus. I’ll be taking a month again for my next kid (took 6 weeks last time). Going to be a mix of parenting and biz development on my new projects to escape the office.

What a delightful worldview you’ve got yourself there.

Have you never stood looking into the grand canyon thinking about how amazing the planet is or at the foot of the Taj Mahal at sunset, or sat at a pavement cafe in paris watching people go by or wandered around the souk in Marrakech, had tapas with the locals at Cava Baja in Madrid, danced with a hot girl in an underground club in Berlin at 6am, you get the point.

or are you the guy who looks up briefly from his phone, goes “meh, I’d rather be sitting at my desk trying to figure out where I’ve made a typo in my model”

Brainwashed is an understatement. Who else would enjoy coming in to work every morning and being exploited in broad daylight. Every other week when Greenie’s boss signs his check, he’s in disbelief how he can get away with paying so little for so much.

^Anyway, back to the topic at hand…

San Franciso has just become the first city in the US to mandate six weeks of maternity leave to new parents.

Apparently, in California, there’s already a law requiring that employees receive 55% of their wages for six weeks, which is apparently funded by some sort of state unemployment compensation or payroll tax. San Francisco is taking it a step further, requiring that employers pony up the 45% difference. Aaaaaand…it applies to parent of either gender, and to both full- and part-time employees.

My prediction–ten years from now, you will probably see either 1.) large, large unemployment for SF women between the ages of 16 and 40, 2.) fewer and fewer businesses opening up in San Francisco, or 3.) both.

^the aspect that it applies to both genders equally is intended to eliminate your first predicition

San Fran, home of the $1,000,000 cookie cutter condo.

Yeah, I thought about that after I wrote it.

In some ways, I think that’s probably worse. Now, you’ll just get unemployement in the sub-40 crowd, regardless of gender.

And is there any good reason (other than the reason BVG wrote) that men should get six weeks of paid maternity leave? I can understand for women, because of the physical change they go through. But men?

This, my friends, is another example of the pussification of America.

^No it won’t. Are companies going to start hiring old people? And since when are pro-family policies the start of the pussification of America? Wait, aren’t Republicans supposed to be pro-family? Or is everything to you about promoting the interests of businesses over all social costs?

^Yes. That is exactly what they will start doing, to the extent that it’s feasible.

Republicans are supposed to be many things. Very few of them represent any of them.

Anyway, what grinds my gears about your post, and presumably people like you, is that you think the government has to get involved to solve problems. You seemingly have little to no faith that individuals or groups of individuals can solve problems. If paid maternity/paternity leave is something people want, employers will offer it to get the best talent. We don’t need the government telling us how to run our shit.

The people that feel the government needs to take control of these situations are pussies.

I can never understand why people have such faith in the efficiency of markets

Pipe down, Gramps.

Don’t get me wrong. The 90% of the American people should be institutionalized. However, if you think any aspect of the government is more efficient, you’re retarded. I mean, literally mentally handicapped.

FWIW, I like you. I think this is just a matter of perspective, you not being American. So, you know, Bob’s your uncle and all.

How wouldn’t efficient markets provide this? Wait… what gives you the “right” to this in the first place? It’s essentially forcing the owner of the resources to give those resources to someone else. As has been stated.

Someone please create 5 new threads, these are getting stale.

It’s not about solving problems, anybody can solve problems. It’s about the solution that’s going to come out. Who is that solution going to favor, what are the externalities, and who bears the costs? Different people value each thing differently. Plus, the government is not some abstract exogenous entity, government policies reflect the popular mandate, and to your point, does represent individuals or groups of individuals solving their problems. So yes, sometimes we do need the government telling us how to run our shit.
