I bought the Elan videos because all the good things i heard about him, and started the videos after i was done with my first reading and was feeling that i couldnt remember anything. The videos start off with some other guy who is really boring and slow, but when i started FRA today with Olinto i gotta say he lived up to the hype.
Yeh I just downloaded the equity residual income one and Olinto was awesome. Who is the instructor for the rest of the course? is it that Basit guy? I thought he wasn’t too bad. I’m using Schweser right now and Andy and John are pretty good but Marc is…well he’s something special.
Peter Olinto no doubt is very fun to watch, but the other guy Basit is really not bad either. Yes his pace is slow compared to peter but i believe he really explains the material very well. I’m a retaker plus i’m very comfortable with studying by my own, but when i first read the new pensions chapter it totally went over my head. This prompted me to watch his pensions video and i must say he has done an awesome job on it.
Just wait till you get to his pensions video, hamada. You’re gonna agree with me.
The Basit guy knows what hes doing, it just his pace that kills me, but when i started doing practice problems from videos i watched from him i could do them with a lot of confidence and finally get them right.
post the link from the ELAN site please…all I can see are level 1 stuff
in the top right corner change the drop down from Level I to Level II. It’s f’ing annoying they do it that way but once you change the drop down it’ll show you the Level II stuff. you may have to create a new login.
Can anyone say what portions were taken by Peter Olinto?
Always been a big big fan of Mr.Peter from his Stalla days
Guys, am now debating whether i should buy Elan’s softcopy or hardcopy package… Are the videos downloadable? the thing is i may want to watch the videos someplace outside house, and internet can be a problem. If it’s downloadable to say my ipad or my laptop, i"m buying the softcopy otherwise i’ll have to buy the hardcopy one. thanks much for the input.
Never mind i will order combo softcopy and hardcopy just to be sure. Cheers
I went with Elan over Schweser for L2 as well and I think the videos are much better. They are much more detailed and really dig into the topics while Schweser just seemed to breeze over the material.
I really wish Olinto was doing the entire FRA. I thought that was his specialty since he was a CPA. The pensions stuff and multinational FRA stuff is kicking my ass at the minute. Anybody else really struggled with this part of the material? I bought the pension reading elan video expecting it to be Olinto and it turned out to be the other guy. The video is over 4 hours long!!! He does a good enough job I guess but couldn’t he have sped it up a bit. It’s painfully long and boring to sit through.
Pension accounting is a pain. So is the rest of the frecking curriculum. Can’t remember shit.
I agree that pace of Basit is slow but i believe it is really effective specially for the harder topics. I was able to answer almost all of the EOC questions after watching his pensions video. I feel that Peter’s pace is sometimes too quick and had he recorded pensions then maybe i wouldn’t have understood it that well.
Guys, am using ipad when watching one of the videos and fell asleep hehe. Can you fast forward the video? Dont feel like redo one hour that i watched yday. Cant find the button. Thanks
Yeah, there’s a time bar widget thing on the bottom of the video on my Ipad.
Whoever developed their website needs to be fired though. Real amateur stuff. I had problems viewing the videos on my PC (tried Chrome, then IE, then finally worked using Firefox). And I still have resolution problem using that browser (i.e. the text of the slides is quite grainy on my PC, but perfectly sharp on the IPAD).
Superman wears Peter Olinto pajamas.
Are you all actually taking notes as you watch the videos or just listening? I’m planning to use them for my second pass, but didn’t buy the notes from Elan (nor do I want to print 50 half blank pages of “slides” for each reading) so wondering if those are necessary or if they are the type of teachers that explain things well enough where everything just kinda “clicks”? I won’t be getting to videos for a few weeks, but just curious. Thanks.
Well so far i have only done inventory and long lived assets. I just watch the video. As he makes many writings on the slide (which looks very much like elan notes). it is much easier to understand to watch the videos than only reading the notes
