quiting with notice?

Is it okay to quit without giving a 2 week notice, if you really hate your boss?

No. If you hate him that much then give notice then screw around the last two weeks. But be prepared to have a reputation. It is a small world.

yeah but why does the employee have to worry about burning bridges, the awful boss has also burned a bridge , but they dont seem too worried about it being a small world.

I agree, but the awful boss doesn’t have to worry about going out and getting a new job tomorrow.

If you look at your employee handbook, I am 90% sure you are an employee at will. Therefore, you can walk out now and never come back and there would not be any recourse, or, they could fire you right now and you would have no recourse. That said, the two-week notice is a courtesy. When potential new employers check up with your former boss, they sometimes ask if you gave a two week notice upon departure. I really hated my old boss, so I feel your pain.

Sometimes, burning a bridge is not enough. Some must be destroyed with an ICBM. This way you prevent others from crossing that bridge and repeating your mistake.

i feel you on that

And the boss doesn’t usually have to worry about having employees (or only a few employees) to get future references from.

i feel you on that

My last job I quit on the spot since I was going to be in a competitive situation the next day and that would have been in no one’s best interest. The former employer agreed with this reasoning.

Its not like you will be doing any work during the 2-week notice so treat it like paid vacation. plus it will give you 2 weeks to bad mouth the basturd since all your coworkers will be asking you what happened.

When I was layed off, I had two weeks to continue to ‘work’ and train others on my job duties. I spent most of the time on AF and job searching. Not a bad way to get paid.

but wont doing that be part of burning that stupid bridge.

Definitely just suck it up, give your two weeks, and move on. When I left my old job a year ago, I was ready to nuke that bridge, but in retrospect I’m glad I didn’t, since it gives me more options if I’m asking for references in the future. Point is, in this job market, tread lightly.

Just to clarify for XSellSide and Chad here, all mentions of explosives within this context are strictly metaphorical.

Well, I already have a new job now, but I had problems in my past job where I felt like I wished I had just left earlier without giving my 2 weeks notice. My boss was rude and inappropriate and he even went as far to talk about my body.(im a girl, so it hurt). At times I think, I wished I left with more self respect, cussed him out and quit. F** burning bridges, never again.

“When I was layed off, I had two weeks to continue to ‘work’ and train others on my job duties.” I was laid off once but had 3 MONTHS notice. I worked something like M-Th 9-3 with a 2 hour lunch. Fri 10-2. It didn’t matter beacuse there was no practical way to speed up the 3 month time frame, and I knew I was leaving the industry for good. I frequently got blasted on my lunch break. To be 25 again.

If you walk out now, you miss out on one of life’s most satisfying experiences–getting to look around at your boss and colleagues with that self-satisfied “what are you going to do, fire me?” grin when they meekly ask you to do anything at all for them. I wouldn’t miss it for the world…
