I am pretty sure that on this forum there are many others who knew Bruce much more than I did. I don’t come anywhere close, in fact, I would just sometimes shoot him a PM when and if I had a question in mind or I would just appreciate his views on topics regardless of what they were.I just did not see anyone mentioning the idea so I thought to bring it up while the AF has not diverged into non-relevant topics. As someone who truly contributed to increasing the standards on AF intellectually, ethically and gave everything he had in making AF a better place, I think Bruce deserves a permanent spot here in AF as the place he truly helped improve.
I do understand fully that ultimately this decision requires the approval and beyond all recognition of Chad, but presuming this wouldn’t be an issue, I think we should implement a mechanism that would honor his contribution. This is the first time that I have experienced someone whom I have only been in touch with via the Internet has passed away and I really am clueless about how this would take place so again, presuming Chad is fine with the decision what are your thoughts on how this is going to be implemented.
I do not think that he would have wanted a very ostentatious display. Perhaps someone could just mention this on the anniversary of December 29th. I am pretty sure I will remember this.
^ Yeah,I was thinking of something as subtle as honoring him on his birthday and the date he passed away to share memories and whatnot. Nothing explicit.Just something to bring up his memory.
Bruce was such a positive influence and he will be missed. I really like the idea of paying tribute to Bruce. Please let me know what ideas you have for something we can do in his name. His humility, intelligence and humor will be greatly missed.
My wife just made a similar suggestion, maybe in association with gofundme.
It’s a great idea.
Chad and I at about the same time thought of the idea of a CFA scholarship in Bruce’s name. I think that we could fund it with a small increase in the monthly advertising fees; I, for one, would be happy to contribute.
I think a charity would be a great idea. My preference would be towards a suicide prevention or mental illness awareness organization though. I understand that this is not thematic with the website. However, I think such a cause would do more good compared to giving to CFA candidates, who are generally better off already compared to most people.
that said, it appears the motivation for bchad’s actions were because of financial strain, whether he suffered severe mental illness or not. you could argue that a CFA scholarship checks all of the boxes whereas we’re being presumptuous about his mental illness if we donate to a mental illness cause. i think bchad would support a long debate on the subject.
Yes, supporting the cause to fight depression and mental illness/suicide prevention is a good cause. However, picking which part to support (awareness, therapy, etc.) and to what extent is complex (not impossible). Also, in many cases people do not reach out for help until it is too late. So where to start?
before reading this thread i sent chad a PM suggesting to add a black ribbon to the watercooler section with Bchad’s initials/name/screen name in his memory…
I am just thinking ahead here, but assuming you go through with this idea, bchad’s close relations will become aware of his 15k+ intimate thoughts posted here under the assumption of anonymity. I don’t think this should deter the plan to create a scholarship in his name, but it would probably be spooky and profound for them to discover and read basically a 5000 page diary that they had no idea existed.
