I think it’s time for this thread to become about “the weirdest bathroom you’ve ever been to”! Mine was in a small Thai restaurant “Peek” in Soho. A single person bathroom there had an effect of glass walls when you are inside, so you can see the whole restaurant when peeing. I couldn’t. Had to walk out
^ Subways can be near empty late at night. Anyway, there is a long list of secluded or potentially secluded areas where women could be a victim. A co-ed bathroom is just one of many. Also note: if a man is going into a bathroom to rape a woman I doubt if he cares whether the state allows him in that bathroom.
I used a bathroom in Japan that had an automatic bidet feature. Was a surprising yet refreshing experience. I felt so clean afterward. Seriously- every country should be ontop of this.
And subways late at night can be dangerous. Any woman who lives in NYC has a few stories that had them nervous. I’m just saying it makes sense to provide safe facilities without going to Sharia law.
This is the one argument (and a valid one) I have been trying to take into account.
On a high level I was looking at the assault statistics and male assaulting female cases are extremely more likely (1/5 women vs 1/71 men will be raped in their lifetimes) with the overwhelming majority of perpetrators in each case being male. So you could say that just by playing the numbers there’s still a valid case for the separation by sexes.
In fact, failing to maintain regulation at all because you can’t prevent all cases is similar to having no gun control whatsoever because you can’t prevent all gun deaths.
you could say that by the same assumption there is a valid case for everyone to have to wear chastity belts. Your trying hard today BS but I think you can do better than that.
Not at all really, you need to weigh cost and benefit which your analysis doesn’t. This is how I know you’re on the open bathrooms side. Failure to actually weigh the full costs and relying on carrying it to the extreme. If we’re going to play reductio ad absurdium I could say if you’re going to allow the bathrooms to be mixed then men should be allowed to stroll into a women’s bathroom if they identify with being a woman that day owing to fluid gender identification. That would be stupid too, but also legal. There are just too many weirdos in the world for me to be ok with it.
See my reponse to Geo’s claim about Sharia law if you need more clarity.
TO BE CLEAR: I’m not concerned about true transgender people or even who’s in the men’s bathroom. I’m 100% concerned about predators in the women’s bathroom.
No, but a deterrent is better than no deterrent. Seems to work. Again, see my point about not having no gun control because you can’t prevent all gun deaths.
That’s how legistlation works. You play the numbers game, no legislation is going to work perfectly all of the time. Drunk drivers don’t listen to the rules all the time, lets just not make drunk driving illegal. Great logic!
Ignoring your own apparent debate with yourself on the issue, so if all gym and pool locker rooms moved to coed since to your prior point it has nothing to do with protecting children, you’d see no problem with sending your tween daughter in to change unattended.
That’s not the equivalent of what I’m arguing. I’m not saying rape should be legal (the crime). You’re proposing banning everyone from getting in a car lest one may be drunk and chose to drive.
Am I suggesting banning everyone from bathrooms? I wasn’t aware of that. Please point to that statement.
No, what I suggested is the equivalent of the open container law in cars. Can you drink a beer behind the wheel and be below the limit? Yes. Does it create a statistically precarious situation that relies on judgement and restraint? Yes. It’s illegal.
I’m surprised the Harvard swimmer didn’t get more traction. If she had switched a year earlier, no bennies for Harvard. People will be working the policies. Should be entertaining. Get ready for a ride. Don’t underestimate the creativity of those willing to work the rules.
as this is a male dominated forum, it’s not surprising that we’ve overlooked something. the vast majority of women, including my wife and basically every female friend i’ve ever had, is scared $hitless of being raped on a minute-by-minute basis when in public. entering a co-ed or women’s/tranny washroom would be a nightmare for most women.
at least if a woman goes to the “hoo-ha” washroom, if a man who wasn’t clearly “near” woman were to enter the room “illegally”, the woman can get her guard up and potentially grab her pepperspray or what-have-you. she would be more inclined to yell for help earlier in the process as well. if there is a co-ed washroom or womens/tranny washroom, the woman is either not going to enter due to fear or she will let her guard down and make herself more susceptible to assault. either way, i think most women’s anxiety would be multitudes higher with co-ed or gender-choice washrooms. if the co-ed washroom movement picks up steam, i guarantee you we’ll see major pushback from moderate and conservative women, if not most women.
additionally, every now and then, many women go to the washroom to touch up their hair or make-up or whatever they do so you’d be taking away a private space that women treasure.
^ I thought that too when people were constantly downplaying the risk of sexual assault. I figured it’s easy to say when you grow up with 1/71 odds vs 1/5 for women.
Anyhow, I’m on the same page in that I think if this thing passes and the pervs of the world come out of the woodwork, you’re going to see pretty vocal reversal from the safe space crowd.
As I stated, it’s a very complicated problem and I have conflicting opinions on it. I also have a son and I’d be ignorant to think there will never be a time when he’s in a locker room with a man that has untoward feelings toward boys.
In both cases, it absolutely makes me sick. But, let’s face it, those creeps exist and we’ve ignored them thus far. Using them as the tentpole for this debate doesn’t hold water. I believe we do need to do what’s necessary to keep kids and women safe, but I’m not convinced that’s even 10% of the problem when it comes to this debate.
Edit: Also, again, I think you’re drifting off-topic…though I haven’t read every post. I didn’t think we were discussing all restrooms/locker rooms going co-ed. I thought we were discussing where to put the in-betweeners?
i think we’re kind of discussing both as they are tied to eachother. you can “solve” the in-betweener problem three ways. status quo, allow penises in girls bathrooms or a co-ed free-for-all. status quo sounds like the best “solution”.
Given the symbols for these facilities, MLA just solved the dilemma. Very simple. One is the penis room, surgically created or not. The other is the no-penis room. Those poor soldiers can be the exception. They can use the penis room while waiting for reconstructive surgery. And it can be a big day for the post-op trans. They get to change locker rooms right after surgery. I would say having one chopped or installed means you’re serious.
