Triathlon training thread and Race Schedule / Results (KMD's stomping grounds)

Posts for any of the three sports (run bike swim) or for races (mainly KMD’s victories… go KMD!!).

So KMD I found your strava and that pic of you at the pool with that sun bathing suit you have (its like New Mexico or something?).

Well, anyway yesterday one of the bike techs and the many many many bike shops / stores I went to yesterday (was a lot), helped me out on my setup when he heard I wanted to put my bike together in a day. He put it up on the stand (my frame was in the car, needed a bunch of stuff, but he said he’d switch the pedals for free just to help). So we were talking and he is a triathlete. He was a really cool guy, but he didn’t exactly look like a triathlete. I mean he was fit and everything (very fit), but he said he had a Cervelo P5 and also had a massive tattoo of that sun logo (which sparked my memory) on his calf (he had big calfs, not lean, but like big) with the Ironman logo in front of the sun with 70.3 in very large numbers. I think it was 6in x 6in huge. So I’m thinking 70.3 … that tattoo… the P5 … eventually I had to know. I asked him, so what was your time in the New Mexico 70.3? I was wondering if he won his age division or got a reallly good time. He said 6:15. But to be on a Cervelo P5 and put that tattoo on his calf, I really thought he at least broke 5hrs. I don’t know if it was inappropriate for me to ask, but I really don’t care, I want to know everyones times if they are riding on crazy shit and putting massive Ironman tattoos on their body. I’ve never met one elite triathlete with an Ironman tattoo. The marking seems to be more of a brand for those who work very hard and get decent/respectable times or finish the race and feel like they have accomplished something. But, I feel there is a great divide between running a hard road race, or cycling, or swimming, or triathlon and climbing to the elite ranks. Yeah, most of the population doesn’t Run/Bike/Swim at all, they can barely climb the stairs, but still. I tried to head towards higher rankings years ago to make the journey and it was supremely difficult. I feel I am closer now than I was then, but even if I won freaking Hawaii Full Ironman, I don’t think I’d put an Ironman symbol on my ankle with a wreath and a crown or something. I tie a more mystical allegiance to the sports. Running, cycling, and swimming are about traveling through nature and interacting in a favorable way to gain an experience that most do not or most cannot. To put ink on my body represents a much deeper representation of my perspective of the reflection of life. In some ways I feel like the Ironman tattoo people are like someone putting NFL on their arm to represent that they played. They competed. They were in the league. But, their real love is for the sport of football, and its kind of wacky to me at times for people to put the brand of an organization on their body. But, for some, it is the mark of a ‘badass’. But, in my mind 5:00 is very respectable for 70.3 and 4:30 is badass. But, that’s just me. I had a goal of 5:00 years ago with a stretch goal of 4:30. I didn’t get into heavy training and had to back off early for some reason. But, I had a really good couple of months in training with one of my spin instructors, Rip.

Rip was really a good guy and we had lots of talks about race strategy and the components of the sport. He broke 10hr in Hawaii in a Full Ironman (I think the picture above), which is very respectable. I don’t even want to ever attempt a Full Ironman, too risky for my body I feel. I think the half Ironmans are out for me as well as my knees just don’t like the mileage required to train for a 13.1 mile event at the end of 2 other events, which is much more difficult than it sounds for the person who hasn’t completed a Half Iron before. So, I guess my focus will be sprint triathlons after the 9/9 mile race and climbing races in cycling (as well as MMA/Muay Thai). I think I’ll have to go to Colorado for a good climbing race; I looked up some good ones years ago that might be worth the trip over there. Could be a fun time. I’m really anal about taking apart my bikes though and putting them back together so would probably drive over flying.

Also, triathlons are like MMA, you don’t get paid shit even if you do get the top time. I’ve never met so many talented athletes in these two sports that are just insanely gifted and broke, yet have at least $20K in bike gear (for the cyclists / triathletes). Love for the sport is strong. So you just gotta be gangster and roll with it. Image result for gangster gif

Lol ACE… that stalking is so blatant I can’t even get mad

I appreciate the respect and acknowledgement!

I was actually thinking triathlon would be a space you could really accel in. You seem to have a natural tenancy to be very “obsessive” with your training. You find joy in that even. You also are able to handle large volumes of training without burnout or over training issues (from what I can tell) I would not let the knee hold you back… its not “bad”. You just need to take care of it and then not do sprints, like, every day…lol!

If you DO get into triathlon, you will need a coach and you will need to listen! The biggest obstacle I see is YOU! I get the impression you train from the heart, which is great! … WHEN channeled with strategy.

truth!

get someeeeeeeeeeeee

Yeah I am obsessive, driven and focused, when I want to be. I got a new phone setup on my bike today that may track Strava better. These issues are a pain. I don’t know why it is cutting off for me, but at least you have a general idea of the miles I am putting in. I really think it was close to 250miles on my first three days of training, but whatever.

On my peak day next Thursday I’m looking to hit 150mi in 6min sprints. As I hit around 8,000 calories twice this week in calories burned, I’m probably going to have to start meal planning on Tuesday for Thursday’s nutrients as a quick grab bottle approach will cut out rest (Maybe 12-30 bottles depending on how much water I want to put in them vs food/heavy calories). Probably should prepare 10,000 calories in 24oz bottles. I might set up a station at my car with a bunch of coolers.

Who’s insane now motherfuckers …

You’ll definitely beat me on this one, as you should. I felt this race was a great medium to test my limits right now. I pushed so hard for 12 days or so in cycling, training on more of an Ironman’s mileage or Ultra Endurance cyclist than a 70.3, so my cycling is going to be very strong right now. Swimming doesn’t need to be considered too much. I’ll probably get high 20min or something like that. The time to train to get an extra couple of minutes there isn’t where I’m going to find the maximum net gain. Its really going to be on the run. I haven’t put run mileage in lately and would like to be able to give a good amount of effort on the 13.1. Moreso even than that, I’m thinking of trying to try to gas out on just the swim + bike (like your plan next time to try to gas out on 800m on the mile). If I didn’t train for this race specifically and want a low injury / impact based plan, I think that is it. If I don’t have any gas left to run quick on the 13.1, maybe my susceptibility to injury will be less (or it could be more technically if I pushed myself really really hard in the bike). This is another race that I want to come out of it walking properly and then to take Monday morning off and back to MMA on Monday night. I honestly don’t think I’m going to get tired until mile 5 of the run, but who knows.

Also, I’m really liking my steel frame right now. My carbon fiber Madone still hasn’t been able to be worked on as all the stores have been closed. Would it be crazy to ride a steel frame in a 70.3 race? Its not super hilly. I’ve been having a lot of fun on that Jamis. I’m on the fence about which bike to ride on, actually. I’m thinking of running in Brooks Ghost 10 shoes. My time is going to be slower, but less prone to injury.

Use the Jamis if you can. If you want to use this as a test to see where you are at it would be silly to handicap yourself on purpose

Also… you should expect to don the swim in about 35min on no training. I am a strong swimmer and looking at about 32min.

70.3 is a long race. A lot can go wrong within the body so I like to keep an open mind going into a race like this and stay humble. Hydration and fueling can be the biggest challenge. What your body can process at racing effort level is different than in training. In addition, the body has higher carbohydrate needs in racing(as opposed to fat) so keeping up with it is probably the hardest part. It is what I am most worried about after my long brick I did on Thursday. I physically had it in me to run fast, but I became very ill in my “insides”. It may have been dehydration related or simply that my heart rate was too high after so many hours. Whatever it was, if that had been the race I would not finished it. Next weekend I plan to hydrate very aggressively on the bike with gatorade ( so I get the calories as well). Thinking at least 4 sport bottles. I will also take about 5 gels. Then on the run I will hopefully be well enough to support the capability I know I have.

Good luck out there ACE… long triathlon is a heartless bit&h!

Last time I swam with little to no training, but I wasn’t in nearly as good as shape as I am now. I had a wetsuit top malfunction as well and my collar was dragging and water was swelling up in my back the whole swim (RipCurl 2/1 surf top). Sucked, but still got a decent time. 31:06 swim at Augusta 2013.

My bad!

I keep under estimating your natural talent!

heh - well Augusta is one of the fastest swims in the 70.3 series (at times), so I’m not that that good…

I don’t understand.

Jamis = Steel Madone = Carbon Fiber Wouldn’t the steel be handicapping myself? Its odd though because my speeds are starting to equal my carbon fiber on the steel. I can’t tell if I’m getting better on the steel Jamis or if my overall gains are getting better. Maybe it is a bit of both.

What bike are you riding for the race - I guess everyone usually rides carbon fiber, right?

Opps… I mixed up your bikes. I meant ride the non steel one!

I have a carbon fiber frame (an Aegis T2) I don’t have fancy wheels or anything. Truth is, unless you are REALLY flying, they don’t make much difference.
