Well it is degrees of crony capitalism. In China, state investment companies will literally bid up stocks held by politicians, so the politicians can sell at high prices, for instance. Some corruption is unavoidable, but some corruption is avoidable…

pure socialism/communism is about the dissolution of power hierarchies so by definition, socialism/communism can ONLY exist without cronyism. half assed socialism/communism, or socialism/communism in a capitalist world, as seen in soviet russia, results in power accumulation and cronyism and is no longer socialism/communism. it takes a lot of goodwill and morality at the helm to let the power flow through the system. we’ve never seen true socialism.
on the other hand, capitalism is about centralization and accumulation of power, which naturally results in cronyism. capitalism and fascism are not far from each other on the political spectrum and the definition of fascism is the exact opposite of communism (i.e. maximum power consolidation and maximum cronyism).
so no, by definition socialism/communism cannot exist with cronyism while cronyism is a natural product of fascism/capitalism.

Socialists states throughout history have always been very efficient allocators of resources. Rotting food on docks while the people are starving is an excellent example. But lack of individual incentive doesn’t explain the phenomenon. It must have been the cronyism. So MLA, you’ve just chosen to play a character on AF, right? so both of you are calling current and cultural revolution china socialism? would you call the soviet union socialism? by definition, they were all capitalism with socialist policy wrt to key resources. hell, even the us of a has socialist policies wrt to food supply and other things. is that what they teach you south of the border? that the u.s. is pure capitalism and the dirty reds are not capitalist at all?
also, i’m not arguing that social market economies are better resource allocators than purer market economies or that they’re even favourable. the question was is cronyism in socialism and the answer is no, not in pure socialism. theoretically, the degree of cronyism should gradually decline as you move from fascism to capitalism to social capitalism to socialism. theoretically, if china caught up to the u.s in terms of total capital and wealth, it is likely that it would have less cronyism than the u.s. due to its more socialist leanings, which by definition involves less power accumulation which is the source of cronyism.
