whats the study strategy for level II

Dear all, I was just wandering, what study strategy do you think is best for the level II exams. I mean, which sections do you think one should start with? Thanks

start with all of them.

hi mr moose, Dont u think starting with all of them will just make it confusing? I was thinking following the order of the books will be worth it, but then some materials in some of the sections, such as quants is needed to understand some other sections.

it really doesn’t matter. I would do ethics last though

I think I will start with my weak areas first… (Quant for me)… since I will need to go back to it again… then the big three… then the rest… I will probably need to review it more than once since I am not the super-smart-one-time-reading-remembering-type…

what are the big 3 ? FRA, equity and what ? derivatives ?

Study in order. Seriously. Don’t skip around, it’ll definitely hurt you, and you want to keep your studying structured. EDIT: Except maybe ethics, you can do last.

I’m planning to read all CFAI books and sections in order at the rate of about 1 session per week - 2 weeks. This should give me a good solid 2 month review at the end of the reading. I’m making flash cards and written review guides as I complete each study session. I’m also using the Allen Prep CFA Question bank and lesson MP3s while at work during the day. If I am taking L1 in December should I start studying for L2 in January before knowing if I passed or not? Or should I wait til the next June to take it? Is 6 months enough for L2?

You will have to misswallstreet as you won’t have enough time to wait until the end of january.

Will they even let you register for Level II without a result from Level I? I don’t think they’ll let you register until you get a positive Level I result. Exam results get released around Jan 2x. This would give you Feb, Mar, Aprl, and May to do 18 sessions of readings and a comprehensive review. That’s plenty of time for Level I, but might not be enough for Level II (but of course it all depends). I had a friend that started reviewing in Feb for Level II in 2011, and let’s just say it didn’t go so well. Best of luck! More CFA Info and Goodies @ TheGlover.net

You can’t register, but you can buy the books alone if you call CFAI. They are $350 and when you sign up for the exam, you pay the balance plus $100. My work bought them for me while I considered registering when I passed L1 in December and didn’t get my results until late January. However, I walked out of the L1 test knowing I passed. I still ended up not registering for L2 because when I saw the material, I basically said ‘F this. I’m waiting a year.’ It’s different for everyone though.

I would take this sequence: 1. Equity 2. Bonds 3. Alt Investments 4. Derivatives. 5. Fin Reporting Analysis then the remaining ones

There isn’t a must sequence, it all depends on your situation, i think.

Hey I just stumbled upon the Allen Prep CFA instruction video samples on youtube and checked out their website. Since you are using their products, I have a question. What materials have you bought from them and how useful( in terms of quality) are you finding them? I would appreciate if you could give a review about their question bank. Are most of the practice questions in vignette form, mcq’s or both? Thanks.

I currently have the Level II MP3s and the Level II question bank. I also have a friend that is using the videos and he loves it! I’ve found the quality to be better than I expected! At first, I was worried about the price being so low compared to other prep providers, but after taking the plunge I’ve found that Allen Prep is simply awesome! Remember, price is what you PAY. VALUE is what you get! I love the question bank software since it does present questions in Vignette format and also benchmarks your performance against that of other test takers. What turned me on to Allen Prep were the videos on YouTube. During my L1 review, I watched several of the videos and got great clarification on LIFO vs. FIFO inventories during my review. I decided to give them a shot for my L2 prep, and I’m so glad I did it.
