When is CFAI awarding us the Charter

Dear All,

I got information that my local society will respond to my application for membership within the week. However, when will CFAI approve the use of the Charter? I thought it will be in September, but when in September?

The news release of CFAI below referred to October. Which is correct of the two? September or October?http://www.cfainstitute.org/about/press/release/Pages/08062013_89942.aspx

Guys, any info on this?

Email I received from the CFAI after asking :

"Thank you for contacting us regarding the award of your CFA Charter. We will award the CFA charter to you on 4 September 2013. You may not begin using the designation after your Charter is awarded. After we award the Charter, you will receive a letter which confirms your status as a CFA charterholder. You can expect to receive the physical Charter six to eight weeks after the Charter is awarded. We encourage you to review the trademark and usage guidelines on our website at http://www.cfainstitute.org/about/governance/policies/Pages/guide_for_use_of_cfa_institute_marks.aspx. Congratulations on your achievement!

Wow almost identical to last year: Sept 5

2016 for me! Assuming I stay employed

erobak - in your response it said this… “You may not begin using the designation after your Charter is awarded” um… como say what? you award us the designation and then we cannot use it?

Do you do all of the applying for membership, local society, and the charter in one application? I recently passed level 3 and am looking into the application process but right now I just see apply for regular membership to the CFA institure and your local society. It does say to put in the work experience and your two references. When I submit all of that will it automatically submit my application for the charter or did you guys do something differently?

I saw that too. Does that mean we CAN’T use it even after September 4th, even though it’ll show “CFA” after our name?

What are you people talking about? When you get the official email or the website says CFA behind your name, you have been “awarded” and you can use it.

I hear that if are SPR you won’t get your charter until December…

It sounds like we have to wait for a letter before using it.

Yeah looks like a typo. I think it is meant to say “you can’t use designation UNTIL after you are awarded the charter”.

That would make sense and I hope it’s a typo.

I had the same reaction, as the statement as written doesn’t make any sense.

One would hope an institute as finicky as CFAI would be more careful with language.

Thank you guys,…does the September 4 apply only to those who are regular members and have paid the dues. I imagine that those that aren’t active regular members will have to wait…

luckily today, I got an email asking me to activate my membership. All I have to do is to pay…but I am thinking of deferring payment until closer to September 4.

any thoughts?

Why defer? membership is not a full 1 year term. It’s membership by season. you don’t get an extra 2 weeks membership next year because you delayed paying 2 weeks this year.

time value of money…a bird in hand!
