Why do people run ?

Something I have noticed in the U.S is that people run as if there is a bear chasing them once they get off the metro. If the train arrives at locations occupied with offices I kind of get it.But I have noticed the same trend in completely residential Locations when people clearly want to get home.Once they reach the escalators they start climbing them in a complete rush, I have constantly being bumped into when I was standing in the left section by these running types and now I have joined them while still not getting the cause of their behavior.I guess it’s just a herf behavior thing.Any insights?

P.S: I guess if purealpha reads this he is going to add something along the lines of " get out fast".

purealpha is dead. He didn’t run and was crushed to death by fast moving westerners.

Adaptability) is an Ability introduced in Generation IV. Ten Pokémon can have this Ability.

I don’t run for anything anymore (other than fitness of course). I can’t stand people that run or walk briskly around the office thinking their so important and in a rush. Self-confident people don’t rush for anyone.

You’re supposed to stand on the right side if you’re not walking.

Personally I hate the slow Geo’s of the world. I got shit to do. If you’re in my way to get home to my family, I’m running you over. Actually, the reason doesn’t matter, I just hate going slow. Don’t care if it’s Sunday morning, I’m weaving through traffic. The worst are the left lane cruisers on the freeway.

I thought this was going to be a fitness type thread.

I can say that here, it can be maddening to miss the train by 30 seconds, especially if it means waiting 10 minutes for the next one. A friend told me she always runs for the subway/metro to avoid the feeling that the only reason she missed the train was that she didn’t hurry enough.

I occasionally will do this too because if you miss the train and don’t run, you find yourself angry that you didn’t try, whereas if you miss the train after you run, at least you feel you got a little exercise.

I would hazard a guess that people in a rush are probably running late for something. In the morning it is probably work and in the evening it could be family, hobbies etc.

I am a bit of an oddity though in that I hate standing on escalators and travelators. It feels lazy or wasteful to me somehow. So I am probably one of the people stomping past you for no good reason (from your perspective)!

PureAlpha got wiped out in the market turmoil owing to his own hubris. He’s getting his hand chopped off in a third world prison to settle his E*trade margin call wishing he was in the US right now.

Missing a train is a legit reason and I run to catch the train too, however I am talking about specific stations where there is no train to be catched. The funny thing is they start to walk once they are on their way ou of the station.

I used to landscape for this orthopedic surgeon (awesome house). Every evening we were there, you’d hear his car revved out going about mach 2 through the neighborhood from a half mile away, he’d whip around the corner and all but e-brake slide into his garage. One time we asked him why the big rush earlier and he just gave us this puzzled look and asked what rush. Haha.

I walk quickly almost all the time because that is my nature. If I’m interested in taking in the local environment, I slow down and look around, otherwise I prefer to get to where I’m going regardless of any actual external time requirements. That’s why I hate going to NYC (or almost any city for that matter), far too many people lollygagging and getting in my way.

As a frequent traveler, fastest walkers by city:

  1. Chicago

  2. Philadelphia (normally running from violent crime)

  3. NYC

  4. LA (no one walks in LA)

Running sucks. Hate that burning sensation in thigh

People always say NY people are rude, but I think they are mostly just in a hurry. Most people here use public tranportation, so walking is their commute. Look at how people everywhere drive faster than the speed limit or have road rage.

Not everyone can afford chaperones ya know.

I agree. I tell visitors to NY that the one thing that sets New Yorkers off is making them wait for no good reason. There are 8.5 million people and we’re almost all trying to get somewhere. Blocking people’s path, or getting to the front of the deli line and have to er… and ahh… because you haven’t made your choice yet is infuriating to us. But if you stay clear of that issue, New Yorkers are actually a lot nicer and more helpful than most people believe.

This video kinda makes the same point and is amusing:

I remember this tourist dude in the NYC metro telling his friend New York is the city of brotherly love.He was speaking his own language but since he used both of these phrases and no "Philadelphia "was heard, I assume he was reffering to NYC.Anyhow philly is no city of love, dirt and danger was what I saw.

studies show that you at a lower risk of death if you walk faster. this is probably because those who walk slow are actively dying.
