Wiley’s site says material won’t be available until December. Given that this is the first year they have put out Level III material, and possible delays, is it too late to wait for the material to start studying level III?
Because Schweser is simply updating existing Level III study guides to account for minor changes in the curriculum from year to year.
Because this is the first year that Wiley is offering a Level III study guide, Basit is writing all of them from scratch. The writing, reviewing, rewriting, and so on takes a lot longer than merely updating existing materials.
If anyone is waiting to start, they better get started Nyssa is having a sale which I think includes a video option if helpful. http://www.nyssa.org/CFACandidates/LevelIII.aspx But to each their own. At any rate, start something.
Can someone tell me what they thought of Wiley for level 3 please? I used them for level 2 and loved them compared with Schweser. I like the way they give more info, they go into more details. What about level 3 please?
Overall, I liked the material but before you go with Wiley/Elan, know the following things:
In my opinion, I don’t think Wiley should be used as a primary study tool for L3. It’s its second year and I don’t think it’s quite there yet.
The materials arrive late, like really late. If you work full time and have to start studying early in order to make your 300, 400, or however many hours you need, don’t go Wiley. They may have this fixed this year and deliver early, but they have a history of delivery delays, so…
That said, I feel Wiley does a better job at breaking down the material. The videos and explanations are not only better, but they give you second-level understanding which helps you put the questions into perspective.
This helps on the exam because in many cases it’s that second-level understanding that helps you reject a wrong answer or to expound on why something is wrong. Remember, on L3 AM it is not enough to know *that* something is wrong, you need to explain *why* it is wrong. Sounds innocent, but it’s harder than it looks.
Poking around and seeing some people ask questions about answers to exam questions (side note: don’t participate in these discussions, because that’s a C&S violation) and I felt Elan’s “second-level” understanding made these questions quite easy.
How I used Wiley is I purchased it after I read the CFAI materials and did the EOC and Blue Boxes. I feel the combination of the unfiltered material and Wiley’s abridged version prepared me well. Ask me how successful it was in a little over a week
