WOLF/SUBZERO

Anyone got wolf appliances in their kitchen? We’re doing a £100k kitchen refurb and extension…thinking about getting some but not sure of the prices or quality.

They are very pricey, but quality is top of the line. Some others to consider: Viking, Miele, and Thermador. We have GE Monogram in our house. While not quite the quality or recognition of the brands above, we are very happy with them.

If you do not already have a counter depth refrigerator, they take some getting used to and be sure you get a full sized refrigerator and a full sized freezer or you will find yourself running out of space.

I have a wolf range and a subzero but purchased both at a substantial discount. The range is beautiful and suits our kitchen, but I’d argue that if you’re not an avid cook (which I’m not), there are ranges other than Wolf and Viking (or something similar) that will do as good a job at a cheaper price point. The subzero supposedly keeps food fresh for a longer period of time, but again, for that price point the difference is probably marginal.

The one appliance that I’m glad to have spent the extra money on is a Miele dishwasher. It is nearly completely silent when running which makes a difference if you’re in a small apartment or spend a lot of time near the kitchen.

I like those subzero models with the window - pretty sick

Agree with this 1000%. We have a Miele diswasher and you can’t even tell it’s running most of the time. It also does a much better job than the Bosch we had in a prior house and the GE Profile we had in our last house.

That refrigerator is very slick looking, but if you have more than 2 people in the house, it’s not big enough.

What? You are remodeling your kitchen for 100k GBP? Are you borrowing money from your in laws again?

I keep seeing these Viking and Miele appliances in houses for sale. I guess they are good - they look very nice. I don’t know if buying a $5000 oven is going to make me a much better cook, though. Or if a new fridge will make… er the food more cold. But, if you think you can make use of it and you are willing to pay, then why not.

Whatever you do, do not get a microwave drawer or one built into an island unless you are only 3 feet tall. Our last house had it built into the island. It looked really cool when we were looking at the house, but was a huge PITA. Not great with little kids in the house either.

DO get an instant hot water thingy for your sink and a warming drawer.

I don’t know if a $5,000 oven makes someone a better cook, but our Monogram definitely cooks better than ovens we’ve had in other houses. The oven cooks more evenly and keeps a contant temperature level and the range burners are more precise. Our range has a griddle as part of the cooktop though and I find it kind of useless.

What are the margins on this stuff? One half of the world’s billionaires made their fortune in fashion. Maybe I’d be happier if branded products mattered to me. Definitely would have pulled more tail throughout my life. A neighbor of mine wouldn’t buy an off brand a/c unit even after I demonostrated the internals were the same and the warranty was identical. I paid 5k for two units installed. He paid 12k. Go figure.

Lol… I’m actually remortgaging my other house and using the equity to build the extension and renovate the house we’re moving into.

Thanks for this advice.

I’m in the UK and our preference would be to get a big American style fridge freezers. But space is quite limited and there are only 2 of us in the house at the moment.

We may end up going with miele, only because wolf and subzero are soo expensive.

Cooking is my life outside of CFA though.

Oh dear… we are thinking of putting the microwave in the island…as we dont have space to build one in the units. And we are probably not gonna get a hot water tap or a warming draw… That said Merican’ dont have kettles do they? srs.

Is it just me or did anyone else feel like 100k GBP on kitchen renovations and $5k ovens a bit too much?

Maybe I’m just poor…

Think really, really hard about the microwave in the island. It does look really cool, but after a couple of weeks I hated it because I was always bending down to use it. If that’s the only space you have though, not much you can do about it. The hot water tap takes almost no space at all, it does require an electrical outlet under the sink though. Electric kettles aren’t all that common here, but people do have them. We don’t use our instant hot just for tea though, it’s great for cooking as well, since the water is near boiling already. It is also filtered, so there’s that.

They’re also adding square footage, so not insane.

One thing that I’ve seen that looks pretty cool is a water faucet above the stove. It’s a nice feature that allows you to fill up pots of water right on the stovetop rather than in the sink and moving over to the stove.

On a side note, taking equity out of second home to put in a monster kitchen with all of the works in a new home sounds 2006ish circa Florida, Arizona, Califorinia, etc.

I have a Sub-Zero refrigerator… It keeps food cold, but in my opinion it doesn’t really justify the premium price tag.

Waste of money.

Financial freedom / flexibiltity = freedom. You’re literally building yourself a prison. What’s more is that beyond a certain base level of comfort all the gadgets and gizmos will become old to you and you won’t even notice them within a year of buying them.

That’s one thing our kitchen doesn’t have that I wish it did.
