According to the Web site: "Does the CFA Institute membership year run from January to December? No. The membership year runs from 1 July to 30 June. " … "How much will I be charged for dues once I become a member? New members activating July through March will pay full dues. New members activating after 1 April will be asked to pay dues during the next year’s renewal cycle. Member society dues vary; visit any society website for information on that society’s dues. " http://www.cfainstitute.org/memresources/members/member_faq.html##15 So I think it’s best to apply for membership on April 2 to get the maximum amount of time out of it. Unless they actually don’t let you apply and become a member between April 2 and June 30. I just got my work experience approved yesterday. I will wait to apply.

Should show up within 10 minutes after you pay your fees. I just got my experienced approved, and paid my dues. Checked the directory and was listed in the directory with CFA after my name. Already changed my email signature!! Now it finally feels real!!!
Well done ManvsCFA I just can’t believe how f*n useless my local society is. CFAI approves in less than a week, local society approval has now just clicked past more than a calendar month. I don’t understand this, if they meet once a month then it should have been done by now. Anyone else waited more than a month for local society approval?

I luckily only had to wait two weeks… Did you get that survey from the CFAI about the membership application process? I made a point of highlighting that the Local Society process should not exceed the time it takes the CFAI, and that providing them with 45 days to make a decision is much too long. Especially when it is essentially, from what I understand, a rubber stamp process.
I agree. I responded the survey too and added extra comment on slow local society review. I am still waiting for the local review.
Just checked the status of my Application and see APPROVED 42 Months from the CFA Institute. Do local societies ever really reject experience after you get past the Institute?

I’m down to 5 decision days for my local society. i am so f’ng pissed at these people. i can’t explain the frustration.
jbaldyga that is crap, I finally got approved with 12 days to go and I thought that was bad. At least you know you don’t have to wait long now. It seems crazy that the local societies have so much trouble rubber stamping applications, a bit like the institute taking 3 months to get out scantron exam results.
^it’s like their final test. if you can manage not to snap and take an oozie out to a local society event, you get the letters. I’ve heard there have been people who didn’t get a decision within the 45 days. not sure what happens then.
29 decision days to go. One more month waiting…?
3 decision days. I’m going to snap.

Thank you for your message. Our records indicate you have accrued 35 months of acceptable work experience in your position at … The experience we have on file for you covers the period from May 2006 – April 2009, when your application was submitted. To qualify for Regular membership an individual must have at least 48 months of acceptable work experience. Once you have reached 48 months you may request an upgrade to Regular membership and may update your work history dates accordingly. We will then review your details to determine whether you are eligible for the membership upgrade. Please let us know if we can assist with anything else. Best regards, Megan Montgomery Candidate & Member Services --------------------------------------------------------- do you guys think that after completing the 48 months, I will be automatically upgraded to regular member, since they accept my work experience before, or should I go thorough the whole process again ?!

Unfortunately, it’s not automatic. You have to submit an upgrade request, and the whole process takes another 4 to 8 weeks.
decision days = 0. in case this happens to anyone else, i called CFAI and they said they’ll send me an email tomorrow to activate my CFAI membership and I can use the letters (once I activate my CFAI membership) without approval from my local society.
Congratulations! You don’t need to pay society dues. Right on!

Can’t believe this is even allowed to happen. Just ridiculous. Glad you’re able to finally use your letters, but seriously, if they just award the letters without the Society review, then why bother torturing you for 45 days?! You should’ve been able to use the letters 45 days ago!!! In any case, congrats! Use those letters proudly!

Could have done w/ out the 45 days of torture though. definitely would have been nice to put on my resume during that time. thanks and good luck all!
