Wow, this thing exploded in length! I was actually going to post a topic (half jokingly) about what everyone on the forum bench presses…lol. Seriously though, appearances do matter. Less for the job and more for attracting women, but being in shape plays a role in both. People who are out of shape may disagree, but I’ve found that it’s a huge benefit looking good in a suit. As for my workouts, usually weights 2-3x/week and boxing 2-3x/week. I find it’s hard for me to work out more than 4x/week consistently due to time constraints, but usually 4 solid workouts will do the trick. Ideally, once I get settled in my job, I can find a little more time to box as I’m looking to compete in the NYC Golden Gloves in Spring of 2009 (I want to complete the CFA first, which will clear some time for training). As for eating/drinking…that’s the tough part. There’s so many temptations…usually I’ll try to eat well for breakfast and lunch, and then I wind up letting myself go at night and on weekends.

Pay is definately the tradeoff vs “wall street” jobs, but if you look at things on an hourly basis the buyside looks really good to me, particularly if I want to have a lifestyle that involves training for triathlons. It would be impossible for me to do what I do working a 60-80 hour a week grinder. That said, things get real hectic around here during earnings season, I might have to put in 50 hours in a week sometimes… : )
i keep a very good diet and attend a gym to play bbal and lift weights 4-5 days a week, and i do this no matter what and would do it even if it didnt or did lead to “sucess on the street” lol
Equity_Analyst, can you describe your career path?
working out has to come with good nutrition as well, this means you will have to opt out for the more healthier choices at lunch at work, but how do you network if you eat lunch at your desk vs going out???

Its as good as a fine balance and they made it into a movie about 5 years ago.
Nice, boxing. That class would be fun to take. I’m all for working out, but i gotta eat whatever I want. Lucky for me, I have a small appetite. But I gotta have my pizza and icecream when i’m craving them…
I try and work out 4 times a week. When I was in college I could pull 5 times a week but now I usually struggle on the 4th day. Working out has felt like an addiction since I was 15. Not only because I’m vain but also because it makes me feel great. There is nothing like getting your endorphins pumping during a good workout. The only times I’ve stopped were during CFA preparations, because the time constraints got to me, although it certainly would have helped my stress levels. As many others have already stated, working out is only part of the equation. You also have to eat right. Good bodies are made in the gym but great bodies are made in the gym and the kitchen.
6x a week in the gym I used to be a bodybuilder (now 20), now i have a new motto: Train for performance, and the good looks will follow been working out since grade 8. stopped for a 2 years, now its been about 8 months im back again…FEEL SO MUCH FKING BETTER Diet is excellent for the most part, except now since its Ramadan so i dont eat 5-6 times a day. BTW, id say Diet is 85% of the “looking better” thing, the other 15% includes such things as working out, keeping stress under control, etc
“Fitness = Success on the street” ? Well, that was certainly the claim that Aleksey Vayner made in his video! I think that fitness does help in this industry in part because the hours of work involved are intense and that a level of physical stamina is required just to put the work time + family time + sleep time in a balance that advances you and keeps you from going insane. In terms of looks, I think it can help in a sales and presentation role in that people who are attractive will generally get more face time with prospective clients than less attractive people, other things equal. This doesn’t necessarily mean that people will give money to an underperforming product because the relationship person is cute (though I wouldn’t be surprised at that), but the cute salesperson is going to have more opportunities to make their case than the non-cute person. Working out can help with cuteness on both sexes (though I personally don’t go for the super buffed women; I know some guys that really love that)
i was out for 2 days and looks like i missed out on the fun. i’m a big fan of working out. nothing better to combat stress than a nice long run. although snowboarding (in the winter) and salsa dancing (in the summer) is a lot more fun than running on a treadmill. its a shame that people dont get outdoors more often. i think it helps w/ the waistline when working-out doesnt sounds like such a dreadful activity… anyway, that’s my theory on why CO is the “thinnest” state. i gotta admit that i’ve turned into a bit of a gym rat since i’ve been on the east coast. the humidity SUCKS.
nola, I hear you. Snowboarding is the best. I also recently started taking salsa lessons and have had a lot of fun with it.
I try to go to the gym but its freaking depressing every time I go when I compare what I can lift now to what I could life 4 years ago, even though I was a fatty at the time.
I’m all for Salsa. I was probably at my fittest in my adult life when I was out salsa dancing almost every night (alas, that was the “before times” when I was a grad student).
I brought a used bike and ride it around my area of town.(parking is a b**tch) and it is a very good work out.
i lift weights 4x a week. i get into running for 3 week intervals then get bored. In the summer I do alot of watersports off my boat. used to mtn bike competitive, but CFA eliminated that. Now that CFA is done, maybe i can get back into it. nothing like pedalling into the middle of the woods…
I got a lot of free time to work out since I go to school and work late nights at a nightclub. I usually lift three times a week and run just about every day. If it’s a lift day, I’ll throw in some sprints at night. Cardio gets pretty boring after awhile if you stick with the same exercises, so I usually switch it up, since we were just in summer I was swimming a lot at the local gym. Now that it’s getting colder, there’s a fall soccer league right around my home where I play once a week. I love working out and am not looking forward to sacrificing this time when I start my career.
Do any of you take muscle milk? I have been taking it and it’s really good, but I am worried there is too much fat in it, esp saturated? I only take one scoop cuz a full serving is way too many calories. I just read a forum that mentioned side effects of some of the ingredients in it are bad…specifically can cause cardiovascular and neurological problems. Anyone have thoughts/comments?
How many calories does it have? I need to increase my calorie intake.
Well 2 scoops is 350. I take one scoop and that is fine, except it really only has 16g protein. they have Muscle Milk Lite which is basically 175 calories. but umm, did you read what i wrote, there are potentially dangerous chemicals in there Turkish…maybe this is not the best idea to increase calorie intake
