For foreign films I have to add Undergroundto the list. One of my all time faves. That movie is f’ing insane.
Like others above, I liked Hate, but Underground is just so rich, hedonistic, nutty and dark. It makes me want to get drunk. But then, I’ve always had a thing for the Balkans (family ties).
The story follows an underground weapons manufacturer in Belgrade during WWII and evolves into fairly surreal situations. A black marketeer who smuggles the weapons to partisans doesn’t mention to the workers that the war is over, and they keep producing. Years later, they break out of their underground “shelter” — only to convince themselves that the war is still going on.
brain_wash_your_face, I just watched that movie like a month ago and I can’t agree with you more. I got a smile on my face in the first couple of minutes and just kept smiling for the next 3 hours or so.
I was going for the whole ‘appears to watch world cinema because it’s cultured but actually just watches for the vag’ kind of gag but to be fair, it wasn’t really there.
and also because the word vag is criminally underused… much like pishflaps
The only two movies that I want to see in the theaters are the new Hunger Games and the last Hobbit movie. Unless it’s a movie that I’m really really into, I’d just as soon catch it at home on PPV.
Anybody seen “Jupiter Ascending” yet? The previews look promising, but I’ve heard it’s not all that great.
edit - Nevermind. I just noticed that it’s starting in North America today. Still, if you watch it, post a review of it. I haven’t made up my mind if I want to watch it.
Glengarry is required viewing for anyone in sales in any industry. And, I kid you not, Tommy Boy is another one that actually teaches you a lot about selling. It really drives the point home that sales is about connecting with people. Doesn’t matter what you sell or how good your product is (sadly). When Tommy figures that out, he starts killing it.
This is right. It makes sense to ease in with a film about a homicidal maniac with a chainsaw. I actually think you should watch it twice first though and then watch Wall Street because the chainsaw scenes will better prepare you for the tour de force that is Wall Street.
Boiler Room is good. Margin Call is good. Wolf of Wall Street is good.
Avoid Wall Street 2, Trading Places, and arguably Bonfire of the Vanities IMO.
That’s all for now, I have to return some videotapes.
