Why is trump getting so much crap for ‘avoiding’ taxes? He didn’t lie cheat or steal on them did he?
Elections arent about legality they are about optics and public perception. Trump wants to brush them under the rug and not release, HRC is drumming it up as a huge issue because its a win win for her. He looks bad if he doesnt release as he may be trying to hide something, if he does release he likely looks bad to a large portion of Americans. Someone avoiding taxes isnt the worst but he has actual spoken quotes over the last 5 years bashing people for not paying taxes. DT does the same thing with HRC drumming up stories that are win wins for him (Emails)
People generally feel the need to like who they are electing, even though the person you like the most may not be the best leader. This is why we need Artificial Intelligence, so we can elect it president!
Trump avoiding taxes is not a really an issue, everyone with a brain does it. HRC just wants it to be because the voting base doesn’t understand how taxes work.
Hillary running a private email server wasn’t illegal either as ruled by the FBI. Doesn’t stop people from whining about it. Or being paid to give speeches to Wall Street.
What about Hillary and Bill donating $1million to the Clinton Foundation (themselves) and receiving an itemized tax deduction in 2015? They also donate to other charities that, in turn, donate right back to the Clinton Foundation. It’s one big circle jerk amongst their friends.
How is that perceived by the public?

the public wants fairness. trump’s claim is that trump has created almost $10 billion in wealth without paying much if any tax on it. if that’s anywhere near true, the public will crucify him. i don’t care what your stance on taxation is, it is hard to argue that that is fair compared to other taxpayers.
I think the issue with The Donald paying no taxes is that it fuels the desire to increase taxes on the top brackets and the sense that “if you’re rich, the rules most of us live by don’t apply for you.” Leona Helmsley was known for saying “Only the little people pay taxes,” and that gets lots of people thinking about whether the tax laws are rigged and whether the claims that tax cuts are mostly for the rich is true. Warren Buffet paying a lower portion of his income than his secretary…
All of that empowers the Dem’s arguments to the extent that non-1%-ers feel that it’s unfair that those richer than them get to keep more of their income than they do. It empowers the idea that the right has thrown most Americans a few crumbs in tax cuts to get political support, but acutally scheduled most of the cake for themselves. The Trump paying 0% for years is even more damning than Mitt Romney’s carried interest issue, and his “that makes me smart” strikes me as Trump’s 47%-moment.
I think the optics problem is less (assuming that the claim is true) that Trump didn’t pay taxes for years (which is still an issue), and more how he claims it’s evidence of how smart he is.
It’s pretty funny the rednecks, hillbillies and other poor people always think Reagan or Trump is going to help them. You gotta be living deep in a bunker for decades to still believe in that “trickle down whatever” theory. Trump doesn’t pay jack for taxes, he’s going to lower the business tax, corporate profits are going to shoot higher, income inequality will widen, this guy is NOT anti-system. Same system, different face (more orange).
