but has this hypothesis been tested? there could be that one guy who just guessed everything right his whole life. or the girl who slept her way to the top. think Christmas Jones. no way in hell she’s a doctor and nuclear physicist by merit alone, if merit at all.
^ it was more of a joke but are you implying that it is actually impossible? hell, i could outsource a few indian phd’s to write me a dissertation and give me a script to defend for probably 300 bucks. and yes, i could probably guess my way to UofP PhD.
Often people I get to know well like to remark how smart I am. I always reply with telling them I was lucky to go to a math and science boarding school when I was younger. It was the first time I was ever in an environment where I saw how high the ceiling of intelligence is and how far, far away I am from it. Put me in a room of random people, and I’m probably pretty smart and able to adapt really easily. Put me in a room of pretty smart people, and I’m not nearly as impressive.
One guy I know used to routinely take standarized tests for others using fake documents and guaranteed a perfect score (until he got caught). My roommate walked into the ACT and later the LSAT with no preparation (just smoking a blunt beforehand to relax), and score in the top ~5%. I got to witness people playing multiple games of chess at the same time blind folded. People who could solve multivariable math equations just after hearing them read aloud. But what is worse is the subtle feats that I couldn’t describe here. Just how quickly information could be taken about a random subject and analyzed. From my perspective, it was awesome being ‘average’ Plus since my soft skills are pretty strong, the nerds had no chance with the hot/smart babes
I suspect there are a couple on this board that are what I consider ‘very’ intelligent. But I think most are a standard deviation or two out, not chilling at the end of the curve like Bgaychad and S200.
BChad has a good understanding of this topic, this stuff is pretty much known. I worked with this weird stuff for almost a decade, basically same things BChad already said, but a few nuances… Intelligence is just pattern recognition, and so different “types of intelligence” are correlated, because they are actually all one thing. People with high IQ tend to be good at recognizing many different types of patterns; math, language, music, etc. Although at the very top 180-ish, you start to get bizarre specific forms, and sometimes severe deficits. Recognizing patterns in emotions could be included, but in reality this is the one area which might not correlate. As far as high IQers understanding people, I always say the same theory, which seems obvious to me but for some reason isn’t one of the “knowns”. The masses have people skills, because they are the mean and understand other people at the mean. High IQers have people skills, they understand other outliers (except they don’t come into contact with each other much due to rarity, so even here they may be unpracticed). The masses interacting with high IQers doesn’t work for obvious reasons – communication spanning two+ standard deviations just doesn’t work, too alien a mind. You could say the high IQers lack skills at relating to the masses, yet why not turn it around and say the masses lack skills dealing with high IQers? Because, our minds think of the masses as “normal”, and the outliers as the ones with the problem. But the fact is, we all have shit skills understanding 185 IQers. But then there is the EQ thing, which is one of the “knowns”, which is different from what I said above. I’m skeptical of EQ, but I’ve had many conversations with a 150+ psychologist with decades of experience who says it is real, and that high IQers DO have less of it. Lower genetic EQ would be truely not having the pattern recognition skills in recognizing emotions in the self and others…the emotional radar is turned down from birth, or even switched off. One reason nature might have for doing this – emotions often prevent one from reaching the correct answer to a problem, it would make sense that people born with superior problem solving would have this impediment removed…though it does make it difficult for them to communicate the correct answer to the tribe. Thus you have a number of explanations for an apparent lack of people skills 1) communication is limited across IQ bands, 2) high IQers lack interest in repetative homo sapien patterns, they understand, they just don’t care, 3) genetically lower EQ.
Oh, and not republicans vs deomocrats, but just fact – Obama is a high IQer. Took me like 30 seconds listening to him speak to notice, probably a 145er, nothing extreme. He has the common trait of being bored explaining the same logical shit to the masses over and over again and having them not get it. “Like I said before, and before, and before, if you decrease the count of guns, you decrease the ease of killing, and you decrease the deaths, it WILL work”. Good luck with using logic on the masses buddy!
Obama just reads out loud most of the time. And Michelle has stated that without affirmative action neither one of them would have been admitted to the schools they attended. She said they didn’t have the test scores or the grades. Food for thought. And tell us, what is the correlation between legal gun ownership and murder among American cities? Might want to look this one up before you answer. Ever research Canada’s per capita gun ownership…
And many politicians (and others in general) wouldnt have gotten into their schools without going to elite prep schools and having wealthy connected parents. There is no real point here? Affirmative Action is meant to help people from backgrounds that have been historically left out, because their parents cant do it for them Aka Mitt Romney, George W/Jeb Bush, Trump
Hmm, Obama, Trump, and the American masses; we can illustrate the whole communication dilemma using these three entities…
Obama and Trump are likely above average IQ, probably 130-145 range…high enough to be smarter than most, while not so high that they can’t relate to the masses. They both look out at the same problem – how to communicate with these idiots? Two approaches:
Obama – uses logic and reasoning , to go thru it slowly, and explain to the masses the correct answer. But since it takes at least 110 IQ to understand large society problems, only 25% actually understand what he is saying. The 75% are bored and just want him to shut up with all that gay smart talk and do something entertaining.
Trump – uses emotion and irrationality , and gives them the wrong (but entertaining) answer…which the 75% love. They get to wave their fist in the air, “let’s build a wall to keep the foreigners out, let’s cut taxes for everyone, yeehaaa!”. Of course logically this stuff can’t work, but the masses hate logic, they are emotional.
So there you have it, why humans tribes are so dysfunctional! It’s not “the lying politicians” fault (who are largely high IQers), the problem is mean IQ is just too darn low…they all “want a say” in problems they can’t comprehend.
Don’t worry. Affirmative action is alive and well. Shit out of luck if you’re Asian. http://www.aei.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/medschool1.jpg And you do realize the Obamas were far from disadvantaged. Senior was a Harvard alum. Junior’s grandparents were very supportive. Michelle attended magnet schools.
There is a mosaic of quotes and evidence available at the click of a mouse. They both have mentioned legacy helping them as well. Junior’s dad went to Harvard. Michelle’s brother preceded her somewhere as well.
